The first known inhabitants of Alameda were the Ohlone Indians. By the 1800s, Alameda was home to a few small farmhouses clustered around boat landings and the few roads that link the Alameda peninsula (we weren't an island yet) to the mainland. ... Everything changed around 1864 when a rail and ferry system was introduced. Alameda became a residential suburb, and hubs of commerce sprang up all along the rail and ferry routes. The Lunar New Year is the most important holiday in the Chinese zodiac calendar. The 15-day festival began on Friday, February 12 to begin the Year of the Ox.
