Class of 2020: CONGRATULATIONS!! What a way to finish off your high school/collegiate/graduate school accomplishments. Some people I greatly admire are graduating this weekend, and I have to recognize that in addition to all the cliché things that a hundred other people have told you about graduating amongst COVID and overcoming adversity and being resilient and rolling with the punches (all true), the very act of completing your curriculum and moving onto your next step is... a huge feat. Some of my proudest moments have been my graduations. What you just accomplished is something you should be incredibly proud of. Savor every moment. Show gratitude for those that helped you get here. Got @ethanhicks5 in for a little treatment after he ran 24 miles yesterday (1 mile every hour for 24 hours) to raise money to donate to various Black Lives Matter organizations. These are my guys. My husband and my son. I talk about them a lot to patients but the fact that they're Black doesn't come up unless it's relevant to the conversation somehow. I've had patients express their thoughts to me, including things like "Just another Black man. Probably goes home and beats his wife and kicks his dog." Or "I'm scared for my daughter in law to go to the South cause ALL Black people are just so angry." When I tell them my husband and kids are Black, nev...er once have I received an apology, simply a shrug, or even worse "Yes, I knew that." Let me make myself very clear. I will not stand by and let you demean my family like that. I will not tolerate your bigotry and eye rolls while I fear for my husband and child's life. We are raising a black son and I simply do not have the LUXURY of not fighting this fight. If this makes you uncomfortable, I will gladly give you a list of names to take your business elsewhere. #blacklivesmatter
