In 1964, John Yudkin discovered that sugar was linked to obesity and heart disease. In 1972 he wrote a book about it. Spoiler alert: he was correct. But due to ...industry influence and scientific orthodoxy, his career was destroyed and his work was buried. I consider myself a science nerd and read scientific studies in my free time, but I always maintain a healthy sense of skepticism. When I hear the phrase, "the science is settled" on a particular topic, alarm bells go off in my head. We're never done, and when someone is telling you to stop researching a particular topic because the science is in, someone has an agenda. Often with industry influence. Instead of heeding Yudkin's warning, industry sponsored science vilified saturated fat and two generations ate bucket loads of low fat foods replete with excess sugar as the obesity, diabetes, and heart disease rates reached new highs. "Yudkin's (who warned that sugar is the problem, not fats 40 yrs ago) plight should be a cautionary tale to anyone who thinks we should blindly follow a scientific consensus, particularly when it involves extraordinarily complex entities like the human body, or when the consensus is used to push public policies that could affect vast populations." Yudkin's career never recovered, and millions blindly followed the scientific consensus that fat was the culprit, only to find themselves sick with the diseases they were trying to prevent. The more I learn about science, health, and medicine, the more I realize I don't know. But one thing I am confident of: always keep an open mind and consider diverse opinions, even ones from the fringe minority. Sometimes they're right. (thanks to Aimee Quin for this and the commentary above)
