EL KESA, POR KODO SAWAKI Un día, un ‘Unsui’ me preguntó por el significado del Kesa. Le respondí: El Kesa es algo que no está claro. Me miró sorprendido y est...upefacto, con cara de pensar que yo decía cualquier cosa. Realmente el Kesa es indefinible, tanto por su color roto, color de ruina o de harapos, como por su dimensión que no responde a ninguna regla precisa. No está limitado por ningún aspecto definido que pudiera contenerlo. Es la razón por la cual ha sido llamado ‘el vestido del arrozal de la dicha sin aspecto’. Se dice que Shakyamuni medía mil pies y que Miroku mediría mil pies. Pero el Kesa que Shakyamuni transmite a Miroku no es ni grande ni pequeño, es un vestido sin aspecto y un ‘arrozal de dicha’. Realmente, es algo inconcebible. El kesa, vestido de lloviznas y rocios, brumas y nubes es el símbolo de la substancia de la Ley de Buda. El cielo, la tierra, el universo entero no son mas que un solo y único Kesa. Nada existe fuera de él. Ni subimos al cielo ni bajamos al infierno, no vamos a ningún sitio ni venimos de ningún sitio. No hay mas que un Kesa y el hombre se debe el llevarlo. El príncipe Shotoku, que introdujo el Budismo en Japón llevaba el Kesa para gestionar los asuntos de Estado, y lo llevaba cuando comentaba los tres Sutra Mahayana. El emperador Shomu lo llevaba también para gobernar y varias generaciones de emperadores han tenido fe en el Kesa. También, en el mundo de los guerreros: Kikuchi Taketoki, Takeda Shingen y Uesugi Kenshin se han beneficiado de sus infinitas virtudes. Llevar el Kesa y transmitirlo es la dicha suprema del hombre. Aquel que piensa que no es más que un tejido de estrecho formalismo es un juguete de su mal Karma, pero aquel que se alegra de llevarlo recibe su parte de alegría. Es Daichi Zenji quien ha expresado mejor la gran alegría que procura el Kesa a todo el Universo: Mi cuerpo vestido del arrozal de la dicha es feliz Hombre tranquilo, he ganado el universo Me abandono a él, yendo o permaneciendo a su voluntad La brisa fresca acompaña las nubes blancas Jijuyu Zanmai (El verdadero zazen, transmitido por Budas y Patriarcas)

Roshi Livingston founded the New Orleans Zen Temple, our parent temple, and many of us in California traveled to meet him and learn from him through the years. The practice he has shared with us continues.
