Yesterday, Yu Ming was awarded Member of the Year by the Diverse Charter Schools Coalition at their annual convening, for our "commitment to 'interrupting inequity', with regard to our high-quality academic environment, social-emotional development curriculum, and unwavering dedication to unpack the trauma of racism," along with fellow member Prospect Schools. This past Tuesday, the Trustees of the Alameda County Office of Education approved Yu Ming's request to revise our charter, and open three more classes of Kindergarten in the Fall of 2021. We will also be serving a greater percentage of socio-economically disadvantaged students. This revision was approved by an overwhelming 6-1 vote; and we are thrilled to be advancing our long-held goal to be a greater force for equity of opportunity at a time when that couldn’t matter more. Aimed at infants and toddlers through elementary school students, these titles introduce topics such as intersectionality and privilege, with explanations that are age-appropriate and honest.

We are proud of our student Khalil for speaking up against racism and policy brutality, and learning about the complex history of our country and our ancestors. His testimony illustrates the importance of educating our students about these issues, as they are the activists, lawmakers, voters, and change makers of tomorrow. Dismantling systemic racism is a multigenerational journey.

During this past week and weekend, we have seen people’s sadness, outrage, and anguish manifest itself across the country in the aftermath of the tragic killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and countless others. We, at Yu Ming, are profoundly affected as educators, as parents, and as Americans, and we unequivocally condemn these violent acts, and all acts of racism and bigotry in all their forms. We stand with our students, families, and staff who are pers...onally impacted by the daily threats against their safety and well-being.
