Even with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, YSI was able to serve nearly 20,000 children through our supplemental science education programs, many of whom are from low-income communities. For many kids in our scholarship-funded school groups, YSI's programs are their first opportunity to hike in nature or see a live owl up close. Interacting with live animals and understanding science through hands-on learning helps enrich their educational experience. By engaging stud...ents with experiential learning, we can help reduce the educational shortfalls that are accumulating during this crazy, unpredictable time. We will start our day by talking about our most precious resource- Water! Where does it come from? How do we get it? Can we survive without it? What needs water to stay alive? Our instructors will talk about our watershed, and how we are different from those who live closer to the ocean.... We will also meet some animals that depend on water to survive, and why they cannot live without it. This program includes many insects you might not even know were there! After seeing the live animals, we will move our journey to the actual water source- Lake Vasona! 11/14 - Science Safaris at Alum Rock Park - Scavenger Hunt! Exciting things are coming at YSI! Join us for our upcoming FREE Self-Guided Science Safaris at our Alum Rock location! We have planned fun filled events that will help you get out in the beautiful Alum Rock Park while enjoying some much needed fresh air and wildlife! These are no host events, but a YSI staff member will be available to be sure everyone arrives on time and takes the correct designated trail. We will ...also be making sure everyone is staying safe by following the required protocol of social distancing while wearing a facial mask. YSI scavenger hunts are no host self-guided hunt for individual families from the same household. Families will be sent an email that will include the time slot chosen plus their designated scavenger map, along with a scavenger hunt list. YSI will have a single staff member on standby to ensure families are arriving at their designated times and that they are following all proper protocol, especially social distancing of 6 feet or more while wearing facial masks. Families are invited to take photos to upload onto YSI's social media pages, but please do not touch anything in nature to keep everything and everyone safe. 11/14 - Virtual Storytime with YSI - Rooster's Off to see The World Join us for a virtual storytime at YSI! Executive Office Assistant Merlin is in office today! When camps are in session, every Friday we bring one of our owls to our Vasona location for our campers to see as a special treat at the end of the week! After being such a wonderful educational ambassador to our campers, Merlin then gets to hang out on his travel perch until he goes back to his aviary at the Alum Rock Park YSI location. We certainly enjoy sharing his handsomeness with everyone! Merlin is with YSI due to... having cataracts and being usable to survive in the wild. Wildlife Wonders: July 20-24, 2020 Actively investigate animal bodies and behaviors with art, experiments, and games. Meet live animals, handle specimens, and learn to identify adaptations that help species survive. It’s going to be a wildly wonderful week of wildlife!... Phunky Physics: July 27-31, 2020 Unlock the secrets to the physical realm with physics! Discover the principles of physics while making music, creating and flying airplanes and rockets, and conducting experiments with magnetism, electricity, light, and more. Radical Reptiles: August 3-7, 2020 During the week, campers will have the chance to meet and touch YSI’s wide variety of live reptiles. Take an up-close look at reptilian anatomy as we learn the proper techniques scientists use to examine skeletons, skins, shells, and fossils. Discover the fascinating adaptations that snakes, lizards, turtles, and tortoises use for survival and gain insight into how these creatures live. Today was a productive day at YSI! Our two owls, Scout (Western Screech Owl) and Merlin (Great Horned Owl), were coped! Coping is a term used for the clipping and filing of the talons and beak. If these two were in the wild, they'd be able to scrape their beaks or file their talons on the course bark of a tree. Since these two remain in captivity due to being non releasable, we do this process for them once a month! Here are some before and after photos, so you can see it's ...a very minute amount taken off. Think about a cats claws. You can see the vein inside called the quick. Cut too far, and it's painful and can bleed. We just do a small tipping so they can still use everything as their form and knife when it's dinner time, but helps keep then safe and healthy. Too much growth can be negative as it can prevent them from eating, or they can puncture their own feet when perched. OUCH!! Fear not though, they both did amazingly wonderful, and we're happy to get their rewarding walk after! Great job Scout and Merlin!
