Did someone say tacos and margaritas? @socaldebbydowling is showing us Side Crow/Parsva Bakasana at our favorite spot @avilas.san.clemente. Show us your crow and don’t forget to tag us! In Sanskrit, Parsva= side, Baka= crane and Asana= pose. The name of this pose in direct translation should be parsva kakasana(kaka=crow). In Side Crow, bent elbows represent the back legs of a perching crow, and straight arms represent the long legs of the crane stretching tall above the wate...r. In Asian cultures, especially Japan, the crane represents happiness, eternal youth, good fortune, and longevity. And while the crow is thought to be a harbinger of bad luck or misfortune, in many cultures it symbolizes magic, mystery, intelligence, and destiny. Side Crow is an arm balancing posture requiring a deep twist in the torso. This posture tones the belly and spine. As an arm balance, side crow gives the gift of confidence, balance, and focus. Benefits Strengthens the arms, wrists, shoulders, abdominal muscles, and spine Stretches the upper back and groins Improves flexibility throughout the spine and lower back Massages the abdominal organs Improves digestion and detoxification

It’s day 28 of our challenge to win a free month of yoga! Get those bonus entries in and show us your 8 Angle Pose /Astavakrasana. @riane.nesper and @limitlessu are showing us their strong poses today! Astavakrasana or Eight-Angle Pose is a hand-balancing asana dedicated to the sage Astavakra, the spiritual guru of King Janaka. it is said that when the Sage was in his mother’s womb, his father, Kagola, made several mistakes while reciting the Vedas (ancient yogic texts). He...aring these mistakes, the unborn Sage laughed. His father became enraged and cursed his son to be born as Astavakra, Asta=8, vakra=bent or curved. So it came to pass that he was born crooked in eight places. These crooks earned him the name Ashtavakra or Eight Crooks. His father, Kagola, got into a philosophical debate with Vandin, the court scholar. While still only a boy Astavakra was a natural scholar of great ability. He went to court and avenged his father’s defeat by beating Vandin in argument and becoming the guru of Janaka. Accordingly, his father blessed him and his deformity vanished. Eight Angle Pose or Astavakrasana requires a strong core, powerful arm strength and reasonable opening through the hips and hamstrings in order to practice the pose in its full expression. It is a perfect example of a posture that has much more to do about understanding what goes where, rather than having enough strength to do it. As tricky as it may appear, once you find the balance point and figure out how to utilize certain body locks, it is actually much easier to hold than many other arm balances. Benefits Strengthens the wrists, arms and shoulders Tones and strengthens, abdominal muscles and inner thighs Improves sense of balance and digestion Helps supply blood to the spine and helps to eliminate toxins Relieves your body of stress and anxiety Helps build concentration

Today’s challenge- show us your Splits/ Hanumanasana. @anaclaudiacannon is giving us her pose in front of our awesome neighbor, @italiancravings The story of Hanuman is one of devotion, courage and triumph of good over evil, representing power and selfless service. Hanuman is said to be the son of the wind, Vayu, the mortal woman, Anjanaya. This unusual pairing gave him a special kinship with both the world of the spirit and the material world. There are many stories of the... Monkey god and how he came to be known. The first was when he was an infant, Hanuman had a voracious appetite and mistook the sun for a giant piece of delicious fruit and took flight to take a bite! Indra (who lived in the sky) intervened and struck him in the jaw, saving him from the sun, but disfiguring his jaw. Hanu=jaw mana=disfigured/prominent. It is also said that Hanuman eradicates the ego. We begin to understand the selfless and humble nature of Hanuman. As he grew to adulthood, he was powerfully loyal to Rama and his Queen Sita. When she became a captive, Rama asked Hanuman to make one of his powerful leaps, from India to the island of Sri Lanka. He stretched out his powerful legs and made sand fly and waves run backwards. Because he was the son of the wind god, he could make these great distances in one leap, saving Sita and establishing his loyalty and selflessness. The power and extension of his legs are the foundation of this pose. In practicing the splits, there is the ego to get there at all cost, taking us out of our internal journey and putting us square on the path of external and aesthetic, looking for the aesthetic and losing the spirit and the devotion to practice and patience this pose cultivates. So take a leap of faith into Hanumanasana, and when faith doesn’t get you all the way there, come back to the practice taking some time for yourself, setting an intention for the day and devoting your energy to something bigger than yourself. Benefits: Strengthens the spine, tones the abdominals Stretches the Thighs, working legs equally in BOTH directions! Opens the hip flexors and quadriceps Deepens Body Awareness Develops Perseverance

PRATAYAHARA- The fifth limb of yoga can be seen as the bridge between external and internal yoga. Pratayahara is often considered the conscious withdrawal of the senses, yet there is so much more to this limb in its literal translation. Composed of two Sanskrit words, prati and ahara, prati means against or away, and ahara means food, or anything we take into ourselves from the outside. Pratyahara means literally control of ahara, or gaining mastery over external influences. ...Think of a turtle withdrawing into its shellthe turtle’s shell is the mind and the turtle’s limbs are the senses. In a world of information overload, with computers, phones, and social media, the practice of pratyahara offers inner peace and quiet. The senses can easily take over, and we end up running from one impulsive reaction to the other, forgetting our higher goals in life. If we are constantly reacting and solely led by our senses, we are held prisoner to them. Pratayahara doesn’t meaning running away, blocking, or numbing your senses, but fully participating in life without being unconsciously led by our sensory desires. If we cultivate our inner world, we are less likely to have knee jerk reactions. Achieving this space, responses become appropriate, and we act with discernment. When our insides become thoroughly nourished on the inside, there is no need to seek nourishment on the outside. #yngstudios #pratayahara #fifthlimbofyoga #morethanyoga #yogaoffthemat #sanclementeyoga #thesanclementeyogi

Saucha begins with the intention of lightening the load we are already carrying. These loads weigh down our mind, body, and spirit - they are real, and they are heavy. This Niyama not only invites us to be clean, organized, and tidy with the way we live in the world, but it also invites us to clean ourselves from the inside out and purify our bodies, thoughts, words, and actions. This guideline of purity invites us to move into ease and rid ourselves of the heaviness, wherev...er it exists. Saucha begins with purifying the external, which often easier to identify: clean body, clean home, and clean workspace, for example. Saucha invites outward cleanliness to guide inner purification. By removing the heaviness and clutter" (be it physical, emotional, or energetic), we are fine tuning our instrument to be able to tune into a higher frequency of love and light, lightening us up to experience the divine mystery of life. Let’s commit to purifying our words, thoughts, and actions by taking an inward journey to be pure and present with each moment, aligned in head and heart, and congruent with pure thoughts, actions, and words. What’s something tangible you can purify in your physical, emotional, or energetic body?
