It's Thankful Thursday! A big thank you to Karyn and other volunteers at Comfort for Critters for providing hand-crafted blankets for our pets! The fun designs and the soft touch show that these blankets were made with love. These blankets will serve as a comfort to the cats at YAPS. These donations will be put to great use, so thank you once again!"

These two lil' buddies are ready for Adoption! Bruzer and Max were recently surrendered to YAPS because their family felt the yard was not safe for them any longer. These boys are the perfect blend of Jack Russell and Chihuahua. Both are 6 years of age and they are on diet. Is it too late to lose weight for the summer? They like to play, enjoy the company of other dogs and have been around children. They also have experience being around cats. They are really friendly and ...looking for a home where they will receive love and be cherished. We would love to keep them together but understand that adopting two dogs is a big ask. They have spent their days living outdoors but are interested in becoming indoor/outdoor dogs. They enjoy comfy beds and creature comforts. They especially like snacks but they know they have to lay off the grazing. If you are interested in meeting Max and Bruzer or just Max or Bruzer, please email [email protected]. Thank you!

YAPS is open by appointment Wednesday through Saturday from 11am to 4pm. After cleaning is done, this is what the Pet Care Team does on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. We are now inviting people that volunteered before March of 2020 to come back and join the team. Volunteer hours need to be scheduled. Please call 909-790-1440 or email [email protected] to schedule your volunteer time. If it has been more than 2 years since you last volunteered, you will be considered a new volunteer.... We are excited to announce that we are revamping our volunteer program and our goal is to start accepting new volunteers and bring back Wags and Walk in September.

Here’s the ABC 7 footage of the San Manuel Small Business Relief Fund. YAPS is grateful and humbled to be one of the 50 recipients. At the very moment this announcement was being made on Friday, our Ginger Bryk was at a San Bernardino shelter pulling two dogs labeled as rescue only. On Friday we also accepted a few surrendered pets. Knowing this funding is coming has allowed us to start thinking of our future to save more lives. In 2020 our rescue efforts slowed due to the pandemic and a decline in funding. Our passion for saving lives has been renewed. Thank you!

Pawdoption News Rory came to YAPS when his owner, a nurse, decided to dedicate her time to COVID patients. She found herself working longer than normal shifts and wanted the ability to travel to locations that needed her assistance most. This left little time for the pooches in life. She was feeling sad about leaving Rory so much but also felt her calling to help others.... Rory is an 8 year old Terrier Mix but he has the energy of a 2 year old pup. This boy didn’t miss a beat and enjoyed running across the big yard at YAPS the most. He may have been a Greyhound in another life. This woman came to YAPS with Rory on her mind. She took her time getting to know him and brought her mom along for support. She decided that she and Rory might just make a great pair! Here’s the update she sent in: Rory is doing well!! I am so in love with him! His new name is Mr. Knightley, as I felt this refined gentleman needed a stately name thank you!!! Congratulations Mr. Knightley and mom!!! Cheers to a New Year!!

Pawdoption News We can't let 2020 end without sharing pawsitive news. Teddy Theodore Houndsworth came to YAPS in June after he suffered an injury to his eye. His human mom felt he wasn't safe at home after she learned that a neighbor pushed a broom handle in Teddy's eye. Teddy was not real comfortable around people when he arrived at YAPS and he chose the people he would allow near him. This hound has a solid intuition and if you so much as have a single negative thought..., he will not trust you. He will only allow loyal, positive people around him. Teddy is extraordinarily handsome and he attracted many suitors that wanted him to be part of their family while at YAPS. He had many meetings but didn't give his paw of approval, so Teddy went into a great foster home. While in foster, Teddy learned to be a little more accepting of people. We learned that Teddy loved to play and was quick to start a new routine that included lots of walks. His foster was careful to tell people not to approach Teddy while on walks and everything went well. We also learned that he preferred to be near his person and would cry a little without a human. He was doing so well that we resumed adoption meetings. He was a different dog when he returned and seemed ready to move on. However, once he entered a new home he had some trouble adapting. He made a few trips out of YAPS for possible adoptions but they didn't stick. We reached out for help and it became clear that we would have to continue to work with Teddy until he was really ready. We continued to field adoption inquiries and in November a young, Veteran and his wife reached out about adopting Teddy. We gave them the full history on Teddy and they remained interested in meeting him. He went home with them on a foster assignment and things were mostly going well. They knew Teddy didn't require them to be perfect and they didn't expect that of them. The first week of December they sent an email and let us know that Teddy sat near the Christmas tree and asked Santa for a Forever Family. They overheard his holiday wish and knew he was meant to be part of their family. They have made it official and now Teddy Theodore Houndsworth is a hound with a home. Forever! We had a surprise for this deserving Veteran and his wife. You see two people pledged funds towards Teddy's adoption fee and Teddy became their holiday gift. Cheers and Happy New Year to Teddy, his family and to all of you that support YAPS! Cheers!!

Pawdoption News We received an email from a person in over their head with a litter of large breed puppies. They let them stay with the parents until they were 7 weeks and then it just became too much. As soon as we had space, the pups were brought to YAPS. At first they were all a little quiet but it didn’t take long for their true personalities to show. 8 full breed puppies can be hilarious and exhausting. These pups love to play and watching them is quite entertaining. ... One by one they found a Forever Home. The last few took a bit longer to adopt out because we had 24 puppies at YAPS. The smallest and youngest pups were getting adopted first. We are so happy to report that all 8 pups will begin 2021 in their Forever Home! Congratulations to the pups and their Forever Families!

Pawdoption News Peggy had a bit of a ruff start. She found herself on the streets and pregnant. She walked into a neighborhood and selected a house to visit. She was hoping they would invite her in and help. She chose the right house because that’s exactly what they did. It was discovered that she had a microchip but unfortunately her family wasn’t interested in picking her up. ... Right after she gave birth, she was surrendered to YAPS where she and her pups moved into the luxury suite. Peggy (mom), Bizzie, Fuzzie, Wolfie and Munchie enjoyed their 10 week stay at YAPS. The family became very social and enjoyed being able to stay together. When it was time for everyone to find a home, Mom was the first to get adopted. And the puppies, of course, found homes quickly after. All these doggies spent Christmas in their new home. Congratulations Peggy, Fuzzie, Munchie, Bizzie, Wolfie and families!!!

Pawdoption News Do you remember Mr. October? We had made a promise to Mr. October, aka Miko, that he would find his furr-ever home by Halloween. We kept that promise to him!! We know Chihuahuas aren't for everyone and knew that it would take a special family to open their home and hearts to this little 9 pound bundle of love.... Miko's family was approved and the "meet and greet" at YAPS led to instant love for him. Miko has settled in nicely into his home and his Mom says, "he is just a love bug!" Miko has wiggled right into their hearts in just a short few weeks. Congratulations to Miko and his pawsome family!!!

What? Who let the dogs out and where are they going? Turns out they drove to YAPS because they are looking for a family to love them. We will have 8 large breed puppies available soon through our Foster-To-Adopt program. We believe the pups to be Shepherd/Labrador blends but there might also be a few other breeds mixed in them. Be on the lookout. We will be posting their photos soon! If you are interested, please email [email protected] for the details.

Are you looking to add a cuddler to your family? Venti would like to apply for the position! Venti is a 2-and-a-half-year-old male Terrier Mix. We would consider him to be medium sized, weighing 46 pounds at his most recent recheck. He was rescued by YAPS from a local shelter where he was brought in as a stray. Although he was initially wary when arriving at YAPS, he quickly learned to embrace all the cuddles the YAPS staff has to offer. He was a natural! The kennel environme...nt still makes him anxious, so he was relieved to hear that he would be able to go home soon. After getting vaccinated, neutered, microchipped, and receiving a whole lotta love from our staff and volunteers, Venti is ready to become a full-time cuddler with a forever family of his own. Cuddling is not Venti’s only passion. He is also an avid player of fetch! He hopes his energy will help keep his new family active. Venti has gotten along well with some of our larger dogs. We believe he would do well with older children. We will require that any children and dogs in the family be present at the time of adoption. As an adult dog, his adoption fee will be $230.00. Venti had us include his headshots as well as some candid photos. If you think Venti would be the perfect cuddler for your family, please email us at [email protected] to request an adoption inquiry form and an adoption appointment with Venti. He is looking forward to hearing from you!

Want a Purrfect Princess of your own? Meet Jasmine! She is positively purrfect at 5 years of age. You will not find a more affectionate kitty anywhere. She thrives on the human touch and is hoping to have a home full of love. She was surrendered to YAPS and is doing fine in our Cattery. However, we have noticed that she really is craving more attention. She wants a person to sit with all day. Are you working from home? Well, Jasmine would love to be your co-worker. She is not camera shy, so she will spice up your zoom meeting just by hanging out next to you. Purrfect, right? Just email [email protected] and we’ll send you more information. The crazy part is her adoption fee is only $25! We are looking forward to hearing from you!

Many times the staff at YAPS sees dogs in the local shelters and we just can't get them off of our minds. Recently, a photo of a little, senior Chihuahua captured our hearts and we knew we had to help her. She was listed as "Fearful" but that didn't dissuade us. She was terrified when we met her. When we held her for the first time we could feel the tension in her body. She was given the name Mavis. It turns out she really isn't fearful; she was just scared in the shelter. S...he isn't scared anymore but she is battling many health issues. She is blind which doesn't seem to be a health issue at this time. Her senior exam and blood panel revealed that Mavis isn't doing well at all. Her blood work shows that her liver levels are dangerously high. Higher than we have ever seen. Her white blood count is also high. Poor girl, she has a mouth full of rotten teeth which may be one of the reasons her white blood cell count is high. Rescuing pets isn't easy. Mavis is being well cared for now but her quality of life is not good. It is breaking our hearts. She is on many medications, she struggles keeping food down and she doesn't have much energy. She is happiest when she is near people. Right now we are doing our best to keep her happy 24/7. As a team, we have decided to do what is best for Mavis. She is scheduled for a follow up blood panel next week. If she continues to decline before that time, we may have to make a very difficult decision. We are sharing this with you because Mavis matters. We want to share her story because we love her and she deserves to have her story told. Please let your pets know they are loved tonight in honor of Mavis and send Mavis good vibes.

YAPS is on a journey with a wonderful, loving Shepherd that we rescued on Sunday. Meet Reggie aka Shadow. Imagine being lost and injured and having to wait almost a week for proper medical treatment. Well, that’s exactly what happened to poor Reggie. After Reggie was hit by a car, Animal Control picked him up and brought him to Yucaipa Animal Hospital to put his fractured elbow in a brace. Dr. Makar saw what a sweet loving boy he was and offered to do surgery right then. Howe...ver, due to California law, he unfortunately wasn’t able to have his fracture surgically repaired until he went through a stray hold at the County Shelter. Lost, alone and in pain, Reggie waited for his Family to find him. However, his Family didn’t find him and he was finally released from his stray hold as a Medical Rescue only. Since we had previous knowledge about Reggie from Dr. Makar, we kept watch for his release and immediately went to get him on a Sunday before he was euthanized. We brought him to YAPS and made an appointment for the next day at Yucaipa Animal Hospital to have Dr. Makar surgically repair the fractured elbow. This was now a more difficult surgery, as the fracture was 5 days old and would have to be broken again and repaired using plates and screws. But, Dr. Makar kept his promise and completed the surgery for free!! We can’t thank him and his staff enough as being YAPS’ Partner Veterinarian who we use daily. Well, we thought that was the end to a very complicated case and once the surgery was completed, Reggie can heal in a loving foster home while he awaits adoption. Here comes the twist to Reggie’s story...or should we say Shadow’s story. Yes, for some unknown reason, Reggie was found in Yucaipa but we were contacted by by a San Bernardino resident that believes Reggie is his dog named Shadow. No one knows how he ended up in Yucaipa. Maybe someone found him in San Bernardino and they brought him to Yucaipa? Someone knows the truth. We were made aware that there was a social media post made by his Family and we immediately notified them that Shadow was safe and received the necessary medical care so he could live a long life pain free. We were made aware this week that the landlord of his possible owner will not allow a dog. We don’t know where Shadow/Reggie’s path will lead at this time, all we know is that he will make a full recovery thanks to Dr. Makar and staff at Yucaipa Animal Hospital.
