Thirty percent (30%) of adult asthma cases are triggered by springtime allergies. You may have had asthma as a kid, but now that you are over 50, you may noticed symptoms not experienced since your childhood. Check out this fact sheet about ‘Adult On-set Asthma’ published by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation. A healthy, well-balanced diet goes a long way to keep your body strong, including your lungs. In general, aim for a variety of foods from each food group to keep your lungs happy. (Hint: More plants and fewer processed foods are better for just about everyone.) To keep your lungs in tiptop shape, here are some examples of foods to enjoy and avoid or limit -- along with not smoking and other lung-friendly habits. https://www.webmd.com/lung/ss/slideshow-foods-lung-health

Our colleagues at UCLA Health Sciences Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine shared with us an update on their work with COVID-19 that we are excited to share. UCLA Health, along with many other hospitals in Los Angeles, are once again experiencing a surge. The hospital currently has 46 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, which is lower than the peak numbers in March, April and May. Importantly, UCLA Health is doing extremely well managing these new COVID-19 patients and most ...patients are surviving the virus. The experimental drug Remdesivir was approved to treat hospitalized patients with severe COVID-19 by the FDA, which issued an emergency use authorization. This is the only approved treatment to date and only comes in an intravenous delivery. Additionally, the Phase I human clinical trial study (NIH/Moderna) came out in the New England Journal of Medicine early this morning demonstrating the novel vaccine (a mixture of nano-lipids and COVID-19 type mRNA), which is given in 2 doses - 28 days apart was successful in creating neutralizing antibodies specific for COVID-19. This hallmark data is critical in the fight against COVID-19. A similar Phase 2 human trial (using the same vaccine) is well on its way (began in May 2020) and the huge human Phase 3 study will start before the end of the month. All this indicates that there will be a vaccine this winter. For the most up-to-date information: https://www.uclahealth.org/coronavirus
