HEAT STROKE IN DOGS A dog’s normal body temperature averages 101F plus or minus 1 degree. That temperature can increase to life-threatening levels due to hot and/or humid weather conditions like we are currently experiencing. Particularly dangerous situations can involve inadequate ventilation in hot vehicles where the temperature can very quickly climb to 40F higher than the temperatures outside. Never leave our pets unattended in cars - even on cloudy days it can get too ...warm. Other situations include being outdoors without shade, being exercised in hot and humid weather, and dogs that are older, overweight, have laryngeal paralysis, or cardiovascular disease. Brachycephalic breeds are also at higher risks. Signs of overheating include panting, hypersalivation, stumbling and weakness, diarrhea, and blue/purple to bright red gums. If you notice these signs, you should immediately begin efforts to cool your pet down. They should be moved to a cooler and shaded area. They should be wetted with cold water over the back of the neck, on the abdomen and in the armpits and groin, paws and ear flaps. They should have a fan directed at them wherever possible. They can be offered cool water to drink but this should not be forced. They should then be taken immediately to the nearest veterinary hospital for aggressive supportive care because hyperthermia can affect numerous organs systems and simply cooling your pet is sometimes not enough. The mortality rates can even be as high as 50% and some dogs might require several days of hospitalization for continued supportive care. Please be mindful and protect your pets this summer season.
