Dear WFMD Community, This past week the news and the advice regarding what to do to stay safe from SARS-COV-2, the virus that causes COVID 19, left many confused. The vibe seemed to be changing. The beautiful weather was calling our names to get out of the house, tempting us back to our old ways of life. Streets were busier and some people seemed to be gathering with several family groups in front of stores and in open spaces. We received conflicting messages regarding how...Continue reading

Dear WFMD member: Many of our patients have been calling and emailing asking how to get their blood drawn to see whether or not they are immune to COVID 19. There are now a couple of options in the Bay Area. Testing is not widely available, it is not certain that insurance will pay, and we can not guarantee how reliable the testing is. Additionally, we are not yet certain as to how we (that is our city, state, country, world) are going to be using the results. If you have a... positive antibody test, we (Whole Family MD) can't say with certainty that you are now immune and can go back to interacting with the world as we all used to. It seems logical, but, the understanding of this illness seems to change daily, so, we want to be sure before we make what seems to be a straightforward statement. If you have a negative test result, we can't say that you have not been exposed. A negative result likely indicates a lack of exposure, however, antibodies take time to develop, and it's possible that the timing of the test wasn't just right and that your antibodies will turn positive later, or, alternatively, that the immunity has already waned. It is for the above reasons that we are not enthusiastic about testing at this time. It is great to be an early adopter, and a positive result would certainly be interesting and suggestive, however, it is also difficult to know how to interpret and use information that is ambiguous and/or unproven. With all that said, we understand that many of you are anxious to have more information. If you would like to proceed with testing we can help. COVID 19 antibody testing sites are listed below. The Mission District Site is ONLY FOR RESIDENTS OF A CERTAIN GEOGRAPHIC AREA IN THE MISSION (see web site) and ONLY April 25th-April 28th. You will need a requisition for the Stanford testing sites. You can self-refer to the Richmond site below. You can email your physician through My Health Online and let her know if you would like to go to the Stanford lab and she will send you a requisition form by email which will come from reception. Should you choose to wait on testing, it is highly likely that it will become easy to get in San Francisco, but, we don't know when. Remember, we are still sheltering in place, and, venturing out to get antibody testing should not be considered an emergency or an essential service. All our best, Whole Family MD Avril Swan, MD Christina Peretz, MD MS Alex Zaphiris, MD COVID 19 antibody testing UCSF Study for certain San Francisco Mission District Residents https://www.unidosensalud.org/about Testing from April 25-28, 9 am - 5 pm. Registration opens online on April 21.
