Materials are everything in design. Whether its sustainability, durability, comfortability, or aesthetic, there are a lot of factors that go into deciding which materials to use in different spaces and places. For this bedroom, we used textured, patterned wallpaper that brings movement to the room. We used our favorite The Urban Electric Co. lamp in classic white and gold metal with frosted glass to resembles an oversized version of stage lights. ... We mixed in a vintage bedside mirror made of bone to add to the wildness of the room. Our vision for this room began with a fictional character: a thirteen-year-old boy who loved science, plants, and animals. We made this room a haven for him a place where the boy could read, look at the stars through his telescope, and spend time thinking. As we thought more about the design concept, we were reminded of the Wes Anderson movie, Moonrise Kingdom. So, we decided to embrace the movie’s aesthetic by adding whimsical elements, vintage items, and quirkiness. W...e placed a branching bookshelf on a wall, a shearling coat converted into chair and ottoman, a few vintage oddities, paper mâché taxidermy, some playful art, and of course, a Moonrise Kingdom poster. Everything is meant to serve the narrative of a young, creative thinker who surrounds himself with nature. The purpose of the wallpaper is to create an atmospheric effect: it looks like clouds, so the boy will always be reminded of the vast space outside. The classic (yet playful) lighting was carefully selected as it blends with this casual, boyish room yet still feels timeless and refined.
