Since August 2004, the price of gold has increased more than 300 percent per troy ounce (t.oz.). In August, 2011 gold hit a record high of $1,900 per troy ounce - today it's $1,234.

So what exactly is a Troy ounce? This is the standard used by jewelers to buy gold. This is an important distinction from standard ounces, which measure 28 grams per ounce while gold is measured at 31.1 grams per Troy ounce.

Gold is a popular choice when it comes to rewarding achievement with medals, statues and trophies. Academy Award, Olympic and Nobel Prize winners all receive golden items in recognition of their achievement. Have you ever gotten a gold medal?
