How ironic is it that the uncomfortable emotions we usually try to avoid are actually strong communicators? When we allow ourselves to feel & experience negative emotions, we can actually learn a great deal about ourselves and the things we need at a particular point in life. For example, consider the last time you felt sincerely angry at someone. This emotion may communicate that a particular boundary has been violated. When we allow ourselves to absorb these messages, we may discover the source of our hurt and find ways to communicate this to the very person who hurt us. I encourage you to spend a bit more time in the discomfort of sadness, hurt or frustration. Lean into this emotion, and try to absorb the message it is sending. Share any thoughts or questions below! Happy weekend, friends! ( Content & @anxious_in_love )

When something, real or perceived, happens that our nervous system deems as too overwhelming and beyond the ability to normally cope, it employs various survival responses (fight, flight, freeze) with the purpose of keeping us alive. These responses are able to be rationalized however necessary but aren’t rational. After the real or perceived threat passes, if we have access to safety, connection and ways to release any excess energy, chances are our body will naturally ret...urn to a place of regulation and there will be minimal long-term effects (e.g. PTSD/CPTSD symptoms). However, when we don’t have access to safety, connection, release or a way to complete the stress cycle, our nervous system not only stores the incomplete survival response, it continually looks for a way to release as it is stuck believing that the threat is ongoing and we/you are still in danger, trying to survive. This is the work of trauma therapy: to give your body a different experience--a different ending. To create enough internal (and sometimes external) safety so that re-visiting that stuck energy/incomplete survival response with the purpose of releasing it can feel manageable and empowering. We’re not saying this to minimize our pasts. They are very important too! However, if you find yourself living back there we encourage you to try and look ahead. You are in today, and have a lot of good life to live. We hope you can be grounded in today and be hopeful for tomorrow. #wavetherapy

If you’re always striving for perfection then you’ll continuously fall short. We are humans. Not machines. We are built for imperfection. When you can recognize that’s okay and practice acceptance then you can be good. You can be more grounded and enjoy life versus fighting that battle for an unachievable goal. #wavetherapy

Today is #mentalhealthday ! Remember that opening the conversation on the subject of mental health and wellbeing can be a powerful catalyst for change. Sometimes you have to be the one to take the lead at home, at work or even amongst your friends to start that conversation and remind others that it’s okay to not be okay and it’s okay to seek help for that. ... This year has been challenging for everyone in their own way, and it’s not over yet. People are suffering in their thoughts all around us as we suffer in our own, and sometimes just a conversation to acknowledge and validate those feelings can help us all feel safer, accepted and less burdened. So share and spread the word. Though we may be separated from one another, we are not alone. Your mental health will ALWAYS matter. Let's admit it - we'd all prefer it if we could just pretend that our problems didn't exist. We even try walking around them and hoping they just go away, just like that pile of laundry we keep ignoring wishing it will get done on its own. While this is easier for sometime, it's not necessarily what's helpful in the long term, when things could just get more complicated or more painful (or that pile keeps getting bigger). And Robert Frost says it best. Sometimes, the only wa...y out, is through. And yes, that's painful. It means tolerating the distress you'd just rather not feel. But the distress doesn't last forever. There's always the light at the end of the tunnel, even if it doesn't seem like that immediately. Here are a few things that can help you in the process. 1. Being kinder to yourself. Things are tough, it's okay to not be okay. 2. Surround yourself with your people. Sometimes we need to be reminded that we're doing our best and that we'll get through this. 3. Remember that you will get through this. You've been through tough times before, and you can definitely get through it again. 4: Seek a therapist that can support you through it.
