Doing things the way you always did them before results in continued bad outcomes. Whether it's engrained racism or striping repaved streets, you've got to change the system to see real, lasting and meaningful results.

As we start to roll out Open Streets in the LBC, here's a video of the recent transformation (after several iterations) from Queens NYC. The most inspiring part is how the community has taken responsibility to keep it going, keep it clean, and make it a great space for everyone.

Last week, we talked about making it easier to bike and walk in Long Beach on the HiLo. Listen in. It couldn't be more timely! We all need more room to #StaySafe and still get some recreation and exercise. Now that Long Beach is about to have a serious conversation about creating #healthystreets, it's time to think about the streets and neighborhoods where full or partial closures to automobiles are needed most to give walkers and bikers much needed room. The Mayor and City Council will talking about opening up streets to more biking and walking at their meeting on May 19th. Let them know you support the idea, and what streets best lend themselves to full or partial closure to automobiles.

This intersection near the CalState campus has been a safety concern for a while now. And yet, not much has been done to improve conditions there. We need to DO more to reduce traffic violence, not just talk about it, do something. Promote more education about safely walking and driving, improve street lighting, make sure crosswalks are well-designed, and traffic signals give pedestrians enough time to make it across. #safestreetslb #visionzero

Imagine a year without ANY pedestrians or bicyclists dying on our roadways! Oslo, a city with a higher population than Long Beach, did just that in 2019.

Governor Newsom refused to sign SB127 late last night, the Complete Streets bill. He intends to rely on his executive order and senior CalTrans staff to create safer streets for all modes of travel, and provide sufficient funding for active transportation. Now we will all have to hold them accountable to live up to that promise.

Starting this weekend in Zaferia/East Anaheim, and continuing throughout October, the open studio tour is a great way to meet local artists and see their work. This year the event is organized by area on each weekend, so walking to several of the studios is possible.

Nearly everyone (85%) wants more walkable communities, but we're not creating or retrofitting enough of them to meet demand.

Join us October 2-4 as we work to clean the air in Rose Park.

The Complete Streets Bill is a signature away from becoming law. Our not so good friends at CalTrans are asking for a veto, so we need to urge the Governor to sign it. Please urge Gavin Newsom to sign SB127 to help make the streets safer for all users by default.... Thanks!!

Come join a community walk in Belmont Heights! Enjoy the coastal breezes and get some steps in. This group walks each month in a different neighborhood, and it's always a good time.

As active transportation advocates, WLB and others were growing increasingly alarmed at the recent spike in pedestrian fatalities along Pacific Avenue, especially after the Beach Streets event in late April brought so many walkers, bikers and rollers there to enjoy a carfree afternoon. We'll continue to work to make this corridor safer for all modes of travel long after the LBPD enforcement surge dissipates. The long-term solution will be re-designing the corridor to slow down traffic by default, and improving the currently uncontrolled and under-lit crosswalks.

Jane's Walk 2019 -- North Pine Join Long Beach Heritage for a unique and interesting tour of Historic North Pine.* The event starts at Gold's Gym, 345 Pine Avenue. The walk includes the many historical architectural gems along North Pine up to 8th Street, and ends at the Press Telegram Building at 6th Street.... For this special tour, there will be additional content related to the life and writing of Jane Jacobs.
