Show your support for Open Streets! Submit a comment to Mayor Robert Garcia and the City Council to encourage them to pass the proposal to study having open streets to prioritize essential travel and social distancing for people throughout our communities, especially those neighborhoods where open public space is limited. https://longbeach.granicusideas.com//5ebc8bdef2b67094e3006

We are saddened to hear about the death of a pedestrian near Cabrillo High School. The incident highlights a major challenge that WBLB has been fighting to address for years now: the safety of pedestrians along Santa Fe. The area around Cabrillo HS is busy with kids while school is in session and busy with other residents when school is out because of the restaurants, shops, and Admiral Kidd Park. In 2017, we conducted walk audits of the area with the local community and highlighted the major areas of improvement to help address bike and pedestrian safety. We hope that it does not take more incidents like this one to get some of the recommendations implemented.

This is an idea we have asked of city leadership for various corridors even before the current health crisis. Opening streets and prioritizing them for people instead of cars will allow Long Beach to demonstrate its leadership in a new and innovative way for the LA region. We'll be posting more about this as information becomes available.

We at WBLB love that folks are out #walking, #biking, and #running. However, as a reminder, please be extra cautious: - stay home if you are not feeling well - observe a 6ft gap between you and others using the roads and trails - give extra space to pass or slow down until you are able to pass safely - make sure you call out your passes to alert the people you are passing... - make sure you are able to hear your surroundings so you know if someone is coming up from behind Also, remember that @LongBeachParks sports facilities are closed. #SocialDistancing
