Dear Vox Families, As has been an annual tradition, our friends @dreamhausla are making sure that all of our students feel the love and appreciation from their community this holiday season. Although we aren’t able to have a large celebration like previous years, @dreamhausla teamed up with @kidsofimmigrants to create a special gift for Vox. Dear Vox Family, I write to you today with a profound feeling of sadness and loss. We mourn the taken lives of so many Black Americans, including the most recent, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd. When we see them, we see us. When we hear their grieving families, we hear our families. We walk in their shoes, live in their communities, and understand all too immediately that we could be them. It’s heartbreaking. It’s horrifying. But We cannot let it be hopeless.... We cling to the foundational declaration of America - [T]hat all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. 244 years later, this declaration has yet to be realized. And the lack of that realization has led us to now - A time in which desperation, anger, fear, sadness, and a history of oppression answers Langston Hughes’ question of what happens to a dream deferred. We know the answer. It explodes. That explosion should not be taken as us giving up on our pursuit of the American dream, but a reaffirmation that we will not rest until it realized for all people - until we walk and live in those lofty goals and can honestly look our black children in the eyes with a smile and guarantee to them that your life, your liberty, and your happiness matter. We opened Vox Collegiate in service of the belief that every child has a right to dream and that it is the duty of the community to ensure those dreams are not deferred. Although we are tired, we will not stop fighting for that. We are a part of a large community of front-line revolutionary thinkers who dare to fight for something better. We stand with our community - those fighting for economic justice, health justice, legal justice, housing justice. And we promise to do our part for the educational justice of all of our children. We’re hopeful. We’re optimistic. We’re angry. We’re here. We’re ready. For as long as it takes...as difficult as it is...WE ARE READY. Participation is voluntary. Reality Check is a sexual and relational health education program encouraging healthy choices for students’ bodies and their futures. Dear Vox Families and Friends, Applications for the City of L.A.'s "Angeleno Card" open today and close on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. For those who qualify, the cards will come with $700, $1,100 or $1,500, depending on the size and income of each household, according to a news release from the City.... Visit their website here: https://hcidla.lacity.org/family-source-centers Please Be Advised: Because of the high demand for this program, you may experience delays getting on their website. You can also call the City of L.A. at 213-252-3040. The Angeleno Card is an effort led by Mayor Eric Garcetti and the Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles to provide direct financial assistance to Angelenos facing extreme economic hardship as a direct result of the COVID-19 crisis. The Angeleno Card aims to help low-wage hourly workers who had jobs in homes and restaurants, seasonal workers, and other workers such as day laborers, street vendors, or self-employed individuals who are experiencing heightened financial hardship because of COVID-19. This economic hardship may be due to job loss, severe reduction of work hours, or furloughs. This includes Angelenos who qualify for federal and state assistance but may not receive that financial support for weeks or longer. To be eligible, applicants must provide documentation that confirms that 1) their household is in the City of Los Angeles, 2) their income fell below the Federal Poverty Level per household size before the COVID-19 crisis (see table below), and 3) they have fallen into deeper economic hardship during the crisis because at least one household member lost a job or had a reduction in income of at least 50%. Immigration status is not considered in determining eligibility.
