Today marks the start of National Hispanic Heritage Month, where we honor the culture and contributions of all Hispanic and Latino Americans.

As we begin the school year under these unusual circumstances, I want all parents and teachers to know how important you are. I've been a public school teacher for over 30 years. I know the troubles you are facing and I will always fight for you.

We need to make sure that our students with special needs are fully supported during remote learning. It's important that they continue to receive the education and assistance that they need.

Long Beach is stepping up to provide more testing and we've dropped the rate of those who have tested positive. In mid-July we were at 15%, and now we're at 8.6%. With everyone doing their part to stay safe and with increased testing, we're making strong progress toward a healthier Long Beach.

The Black Lives Matter movement has not only exposed the extent of police brutality, but also demanded changes to police departments across the country. Change has to start somewhere, and I’m pleased to see that the Long Beach Beach Police Department has launched the Office of Constitutional Policing And Strategic Initiatives, to address police brutality and reinforce accountability. This is a step in the right direction, but our community must continue this conversation to ensure the right changes are made, and reinforced.

Today I filed paperwork with the Long Beach City Clerk to officially be on the November ballot! I have lived in this district for over 70 years, and no one is more qualified to lead us in these trying times. I'm ready to keep working hard for you and your families. Let's do this!!
