Brooklyn Basin in Oakland is named after the ship Brooklyn that made the dangerous 6 month trek from New York to California in 1846. When they left, California was a Mexican territory. When they arrived, California had been occupied by the United States Navy. Brooklyn Basin later became a major center for break-bulk cargo shipping from the 1920s through the 1940s.
