Today is International Animal Hospice Day! Excerpt from Pet Connection Magazine (Sept/Oct 2019): In recent years, the field of animal hospice has grown as an in...creasing number of people seek to provide a peaceful end-of-life experience for their companions. Too often, however, families are still forced to make difficult decisions about their animal companions’ final days without adequate information or preparation. International Animal Hospice Day is a time to learn more about hospice and palliative care options for your animal family members so you have a better understanding about the resources that are available when they reach the end of their lives. The animal hospice and palliative care process is unique in that it provides support for both pets and their caretakers. Families work with a hospice team that helps to ensure that all options are explored for the comfort and care of pets who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness, debilitating condition, or are nearing the end of their lives. The hospice team helps to guide decision making about pain management, mobility, and nutritional needs and offers counseling to family members as they process their grief and spiritually prepare for the loss of their beloved companion. Happy International Cat Day! We love our furry feline friends here at Visiting Vet. Hopefully they’re all relaxing like Rameses here, and staying hydrated and cool in this smoky heat!

Our pets are such a joy. Post a photo of your furry family. Here are my current loves: Ramses, my 13+ year old Siamese, who makes me get up every morning to feed him, lest he collapse from hunger; Kubo, my 15+ year OLD man, who takes constant juggling of medications so he can keep walking; Chisai, my 4 year old Toy Fox Terrier, who eternally hopes to survive to see the next day, and possibly find a bit of chicken on the floor. They make my days better. Focusing on our pets can make each day brighter and happier. Such love!!
It's very hot outside, and dogs wear fur coats. Remember that they cannot afford to be left in the car for even a few minutes. They can quickly die of heat stroke. This is especially true of old dogs, overweight dogs, and dogs with short faces, such as bulldogs. Leave them home with a cool house, plenty of water, and toys to occupy their minds. Remember, even if you leave the engine running with the air conditioning on, the engine can fail for a variety of reasons (overheating, running out of gas, mechanical failure), or the air conditioner can fail, and your beloved friend could still suffer a horrible death. It has happened: https://weather.com/saf/heat/news/police-dog-deaths-hot-car. Be safe, be vigilant
