Our team wishes you a fantastic start to 2021! Hoping the new year brings you new opportunities . . . and expert legal advice to help make them happen! https://hubs.la/H0CQjlm0 #atvirtualcounsel #legalcounsel #legaladvice #newyear #2021 #opportunities
This year instead of trying another juice cleanse or workout routine, we're doing away with year-long resolutions and goals and sharing our commitment to long-lasting principles. https://hubs.la/H0CQjm10 #atvirtualcounsel #newyear #resolutions #principles

Fun fact: Provo, UT has a city ordinance that restricts residents from using a snowball as a missile that could inflict damage. Doing so is punishable as a misdemeanor! https://hubs.la/H0C7L5w0 #holidaylaws #VirtualCounsel #Provo #snowballs #misdemeanor
My employee wants to be a contractor! Being a compliant employer, especially in California, is challenging. If you have any doubt whether your team members are contractors vs. employees, reach out to us in comments or DM and we can help.... But if you already KNOW your team member should be an employee, but they "prefer to remain a contractor for tax purposes," you have a challenge ahead of you . . . We recommend treating your business and your people with respect. Take the steps to become a compliant employer, and understand the costs associated with that. It will grow you as a leader and will make your business far more sophisticated and attractive to others (oh, and legally compliant of course)!

5 Tips for New Business Owners Think like a boss from the beginning.

Five Tips for Start-Ups 1. Incorporate the company 2. Get an Operating Agreement 3. Prepare Independent Contractor Agreements... 4. Register and trademark the company name and logo 5. Hire an attorney Did you do all five?
Years ago, when I started VirtualCounsel I swore off social media. Not for any philosophical reason, rather I was just too damn focused on growing my business. And as you know, some content on social media can be so distracting/lacking. Especially coming from attorneys . . . in my experience, most attorneys like to talk about themselves and showcase how good they look after a professional photo shoot.... Don't get me wrong, we certainly clean up well at VirtualCounsel but that's not the point! We're far more interested in putting in the effort to develop content that matters to you: the startup, the solopreneur, the small business owner. So, we promise to provide that to you, and keep the sexy suits to a minimum!
Create Space to Think In a crowded world, it's so damn important to create space to think. This may be hard as you're working from home, maybe multi-purposing your kitchen table as your workstation! ... Clear your space to clear your thoughts.
A lot of solopreneurs ask us whether it's time for them to form an LLC. Our response boils down to three questions you should ask yourself before moving forward. First, are you making enough revenue to justify the spend? $60-75k annual revenue is a good starting point. Second, are you ready to level-up and treat your business as a business as opposed to just a hobby or side-hustle? ... Third, are you ready to empower others to move you along on your journey? Building a team is the key to unlock the true potential of your business.
I don't celebrate my own small wins often enough . . . at least that's some quality feedback I've received recently. I focus heavily on our team's wins and our clients' wins, and our company wins more so than my own. So, I'm going to drop this little win here . . . and no, I didn't find it at Spencer's Gifts! ... Thank you, Eden Zakay, our rockstar law clerk for the gift! #michaelscott #worldsbestbost #founditatspencersgifts
Less, but Better Has your to-do list ever stacked up like this? This is non-essentialism at its core!... Essentialism means doing less, but better. I just finished consuming this book by Greg McKeown, which so succinctly captures the principal of Essentialism we've been working towards in our personal lives and our business over the past few years. The Way of the Essentialist isn't about getting more done in less time. It's not about getting less done. It's about getting only the right things done. It's about challenging the core assumption of 'we can have it all' and 'I have to do everything' and replacing it with the pursuit of 'the right thing, in the right way, at the right time.' It's about regaining control of our own choices about where to spend our time and energies instead of giving others implicit permission to choose for us.
Life is Not a Zero-Sum Game Needed this reminder recently from @VirtualCounsel's Managing Attorney. He said, "There's no need to tear someone else down to lift another up."... Comparison is hard to avoid, especially when social media seems to over-emphasize the most beautiful, the most successful. Our human nature often calls us to hate on others in order to feel bigger. The lesson here is, don't worry about what other people are doing, or how far along your competitors are. Keep doing you.
Shout out to all of us who get work done on the go and our office views wherever we are.
