Eric Ornelas served in the US Army from 2004 until 2010, including a tour of duty in Afghanistan, as an intelligence analyst. A few weeks ago, Eric and his wif...e, Marie, considered their Christmas shopping excursion, to purchase lights and decorations, a life-changing event as newlyweds. They will celebrate their very first holidays in their brand-new home in Fresno. For that, Eric thanks CalVet’s Home Loans program, which has been helping veterans finance homes since 1921. Read more about CalVet Home Loans and their story in the latest CalVet Connect article. #MyCalVet #CalVetHomeLoans #Veterans #honoringveterans

We are so grateful to our local community for remembering our veterans during the Holiday Season. In the past, the Elks Club has hosted a Holiday party for our residents. Since they were unable to do that this year, they dropped off individual boxes of See's candy along with a recording to play for our residents to enjoy. Then, new to the Home, was a generous donation from the Joint Service Honors Command with 20 beautiful poinsettia's. We have distributed them throughout the Home and they look amazing.

Today, we remember the 2,403 Americans who lost their lives at Pearl Harbor 79 years ago. We are eternally grateful for their sacrifice and service to our nation. #PearlHarbor #PearlHarborRemembranceDay #NeverForgotten #MyCalVet #WorldWarII

On Dec. 22, 79 years ago, Charles and Leroy Myers of Chico, a father-and-son team heavy equipment operators, were among the civilians captured as POWs at Wake I...sland. Leroy’s civilian status changed shortly after the initial attack on the island, when the U.S. Navy inducted him as a Seaman 1st Class. Interesting piece of history. #WorldWarII #PearlHarbor #MilitaryHistory #USNavy

Although Congress abolished slavery in the District of Columbia in 1862, and President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation ended the practice of slavery... in rebellious states in 1863, at war’s end in 1865 the question of slavery had not been resolved at the national level. It wasn't until December 6, 1865 (155 years ago) when Georgia became the 27th state needed to ratify the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and the abolishment of slavery. #CivilWar #13th #MyCalVet #CalVetConnect

Even though it was a foggy morning in Fresno, the Veterans Home of California, Fresno, was filled with warmth and love as families and friends of our veterans participated in a Christmas Car Parade. This event meant the world to our residents as they lined up around our parade grounds to see their loved ones in person for the first time in many, many months. We are looking forward to the day when we can all come together once again. @calvet

They say the USS Hornet is haunted. Want to see for yourself? Two small flashlights, resting several feet apart on the darkened mess deck, suddenly lit up.... A third flashlight, at the opposite end of the room, joined in. All by themselves. Did they really go on and off all by themselves? Two members of the CalVet team experienced the USS Hornet last weekend.
