It is with a heavy heart this evening that we share news that of one of our own Vista Firefighters, Andy Valenta, has been diagnosed with cancer and is currentl...y in the hospital ICU receiving care. Andy is a boisterous member of the Vista Fire Family, touching the lives of all around him through his infectious smile, positivity, and compassion. Now the support and love he has provided to so many over the years is needed by his own family as they deal with this challenging chapter in their lives. Please help in raising support for Andy and his family by going to the GoFundMe page linked below: https://gofund.me/f64b4bc8

Back in August of 2020 a Scout from Boy Scout Troop 752 of Oceanside contacted American Legion Post 365 with an offer to provide the post with a box to be used for the collection of retired U. S. Flags. Michael Corcoran, who was working on becoming an Eagle Scout in Troop 752 and his Dad, Eric, met with me and discussed the Eagle Service project he wanted to work on. The Post has had an ongoing program of collecting old worn-out flags from members and the public for many yea...rs. The addition of a suitable container for collection was welcomed by both the Legion and the VFW which share the same building. After receiving approval from both Commander Steve Miller (American Legion Post 365) and Commander Bruce Mackamul (VFW Post 7041) Michael got to work submitting the required paperwork to Scoutmaster Jason Stewart and the Troop Committee for approval. During the next few months work on the Retired Flag collection box proceeded, at a slower pace than normal due to the COVID-19 restrictions, but with the help of friends Owen Webber, Casey Webber, Mike Webber, Amy Andrews, and his parents, Michael was able to complete his Eagle Scout service project. On Saturday, January 2, 2021, Michael, his Mom and Dad (Eric and Heather) and Scoutmaster Jason Stewart presented the Retired Flag collection box to the Post 365 and Post 7041 Commanders. The Troop will continue its association with us through collecting retired flags from the box and disposing of them in the prescribed manner during scheduled Troop ceremonies. See more
