Meet adoptable Lil’ Sebastian! This handsome boy is very sweet, curious and playful but can be a little shy at first. He was not fed a good diet in his last home so he is overweight and needs lots of extra exercise which he is more than ok with as exploring, running and jumping are some of his favorite hobbies ***If you are interested in adopting any of our amazing shelter bunnies, please email us st [email protected].*** #adoptdontshop #bunnies #adoptablepets

This is Mochi. Mochi is a Fuzzy Lop which is a long-haired breed. Unfortunately, Mochi was not cared for properly in her last home and came to us horribly matted. Her fur was matted all the way down to her skin and had to be shaved in order to get the mats out, hence her bare bottom. It is so important for a rabbit’s health to regularly groom them and keep their fur free of mats. The reason for this is that rabbits have extremely sensitive skin and matted fur can cause skin i...rritation and infection. Long-haired rabbits are a lot more high-maintenance than short-haired rabbits so if you have a long-haired bunny or plan to adopt one, here are the do’s and don’ts to keep them from going through what Mochi did: Do’s: -Brush them EVERY DAY even if they are not shedding. This will significantly help in preventing mats as well as the ingestion of too much fur which can cause a deadly blockage in their stomachs. (Short-haired rabbits can also get a blockage if they ingest too much fur so they should be groomed a couple times a week when not shedding and every day when they are shedding heavily.) -Give them unlimited pure timothy pellets (growing longer fur takes a lot more energy and burns more calories than short fur). -Have an experienced, rabbit-savvy vet or groomer regularly trim your bunny’s fur to keep it short if you do not have the time to brush them every single day. -Brush out any mats that begin to form. The best way is to gently untangle the matted fur with your fingers first to loosen it and then gently brush it out. Don’ts: -Do not take your bunny to a non rabbit-savvy vet or groomer to have their fur trimmed (because of their sensitive skin, rabbits need to be groomed differently than cats and dogs). -Do not tug on their fur when trying to get a mat out as this can cause pain and irritation to your bunny’s skin. -Do not cut mats out of your bunny’s fur unless you have been properly trained in doing so. -Never bathe your bunny! There are many reasons why you shouldn’t do this, the main one being that baths are very traumatic for rabbits and can cause them to go into shock and die. Remember, please do not get a long-haired breed, or any breed, if you are not fully prepared or have the time to give them the daily care they need in order to be healthy and happy. Rabbits are generally more high maintenance pets than dogs and cats so please do your research first before getting one. The House Rabbit Society is an excellent resource for all things bunny and has tons of information on their website rabbit.org. Also, feel free to contact us if you have any bunny questions. #adoptdontshop #bunnies #houserabbits #adoptablepets

We love this special Valentine’s Day post of our adorable VCAS alumni Bexley and Bromley! Posted @withregram @bexley.and.bromley Valentine’s Day Challenge! First date: at @vcasbunnybrigade on 1/5/2020 and we moved in together the same day! Who kissed who first: Bromley gave Bexley lots of kisses and grooming licks on their first date. Bexley took a bit longer to show affection. ... Who is bigger: Bexley weighs almost a pound more Most sensitive: Bexley! She gets spooked by everything. Most stubborn: Bromley, he loves to stomp to express his displeasure. Most competitive: Bexley, she likes to steal food right from Bromley’s mouth. And he lets her! Funniest: Bromley. His nickname is the escape artist because he is always getting in (or out) of something! Do you get flowers often: We both get little nibbles of roses from time to time. We also get some samples from the garden during our playtime in the backyard. Happy Valentine’s Day See more

Congratulations to our sweet, fluffy boy Muppet for finding his forever home! Muppet came to VCAS with a lot of scar tissue in his ears which we think was from a previous and severe mite infestation. VCAS Bunny Brigade 02.11.2020

Meet our foster boy Dorian Grey! Dorien is a sweet, old man who came to the shelter with bad teeth issues. In fact, the roots of his back teeth are very overgrown and were causing him major issues in his right eye. Unfortunately, his eye could not be saved and he had to undergo surgery to have it removed. We are happy to report that Dorien has bounced back very well from his surgeries and is so happy now that he is in an amazing foster home and no longer has to wear the post-...surgery cone of shame. Dorien’s health issues are chronic so he will most likely live permanently with his foster family who adore him and are taking wonderful care of him. Dorien is proof that fostering definitely saves lives! If you would like to join our foster network and open your home temporarily to a VCAS shelter bunny in need, please email us at [email protected]. #fosteringsaveslives #bunnies #houserabbits #animalshelter

We have the most amazing volunteers!!! One of our volunteers’ 16th birthday fell on her shelter day and she wanted to still come to the shelter for her regular shift to selflessly spend her Sweet 16 helping the VCAS shelter bunnies. So, our other volunteers that day spruced up the barn for her and they all celebrated with cupcakes, snacks and lots of pizzazz all while caring for the bunnies. We want to thank all of our incredible, selfless and compassionate volunteers for always giving so much of their time and working so hard to give the shelter bunnies so much love, care and a second chance at life. The Bunny Brigade would not be able to exist if it weren’t for our dedicated volunteers #volunteer #bunnies #houserabbits #animalshelter #sweetsixteen

VCAS alum update!: Check out beautiful Pepper (formerly Conejo) in her forever home! Pepper came to the shelter as a homeless bunny where we cared for her before she was later picked as one of a handful of lucky buns to be transferred to the amazing House Rabbit Society in Northern California. This was the last stop on her journey to finding her forever home as she was then adopted from HRS by her incredibly loving parents. Pepper’s mom reports: Pepper has many, many toys--a...nd of course, she'll be getting more for her bunniversary coming up in just a few weeks! She loves to be up high on things so she can keep an eye on what her humans are doing. She looks pretty indignant here doesn't she? She's probably wondering why we're taking her photo instead of giving her a treat! :) Happy Early Bunniversary Pepper! #adoptdontshop #bunnies #houserabbits #animalshelter

-SALE HAY UPDATE- We know many of you miss purchasing our convenient bags of sale hay at the shelter. While we are still unable to sell hay through the shelter, we are happy to report that Pawsitive Boarding in Ventura is now selling the same $5 bagged flakes of Orchard and Timothy hay that you and your bunnies have come to love! And the proceeds will be donated by Pawsitive Boarding to our VCAS shelter rabbits Please contact Debra at Pawsitive Boarding to arrange pickup a...nd purchase of your hay: Pawsitive Boarding 805-302-9392 [email protected] www.pawsitiveboarding.com **A NOTE ON RHDV AND YOUR HAY** Regarding hay purchased from the shelter or Pawsitive Boarding: the hay from our supplier is not stored in a secure facility. Therefore, if your rabbits are not vaccinated for RHDV, it is strongly advised to store your hay for 105+ days indoors in an environment secure from insects, birds, rodents, cats or other animals prior to feeding it to your rabbits. Remember to store your hay in a dry, dark place with airflow in your container. From the House Rabbit Society As the virus is no longer viable after 105+ days at room temperature (68F), hay that has been grown in an outbreak area but securely stored for longer than 4 months would minimize the risk. In areas with cooler temperatures, hay would need to be securely stored longer RHDV lasts 225 days at 39F, so would need to be stored for 8 months to minimize the risk. #bunnies #houserabbits #adoptdontshop

Have your rabbits received the RHDV vaccine yet? We are happy to report that all of our shelter rabbits are vaccinated, as well as those of our volunteers and fosters! The Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus is a deadly and highly contagious virus that only affects rabbits and is currently spreading in Southern California and in other areas of the U.S. The best way to protect your rabbits from RHDV is through a combination of having your bunnies vaccinated annually, housing them... indoors with no outdoor playtime, and biosecurity measures (see the House Rabbit Society’s website for more information about the best biosecurity measures to take: https://rabbit.org/rhdv/#how-to-protect). Since the vaccine is not currently readily available, we have compiled a list of where you can find it nearby, including some low-cost options from our rescue friends!: -Adopt A Bunny Rabbit Rescue & Dr. Ravenscroft Date: Tuesday, October 20, 9:30am - 12pm Location: Calabasas (exact location provided upon registration) Cost: $20 Register: www.dvm.today For questions, email [email protected]. -BUNS (Bunnies Urgently Needing Shelter Rescue) Dates: TBD Location: Santa Barbara County, exact locations TBD Cost: $30 + $10 for microchip Register to get more information: https://docs.google.com//1FAIpQLScgDDRYUodfAkD1Ww/viewform For questions, leave a message at 805-683-0521. Our foster boy Jitterbug is all set for Halloween where he will dress up as Rabbit Hood so he can steal treats from the rich and give them to himself Jitterbug recently came to the shelter with fly strike. For anyone that doesn’t know, fly strike is an infestation of maggots which is extremely painful and deadly for rabbits if not caught and removed by a rabbit-savvy vet early enough. It is an all too common occurrence in rabbits kept outdoors. It’s not as common, but fly ...strike can affect indoor rabbits as well particularly if they have loose stools or urinary issues that leave their fur damp. Jitterbug had surgery to remove the fly strike and we are happy to report that he is recovering very well in his foster home where he is receiving tons of love and attention. A special thanks to Jitterbug’s foster mom for caring for him while he recovers and for taking this amazing photo! Did you know that grooming your bunny regularly is an incredibly important part of caring for them and keeping them healthy and happy? Everyone that has welcomed a rabbit into their lives knows that rabbits shed a lot. They also clean and lick themselves often throughout the day. This can be problematic as they can ingest a lot of fur if they are not brushed on a regular basis. Ingesting too much fur can cause a serious and often fatal blockage of the stomach exit. Unlike cat...s, rabbits do not have the ability to throw up so if they swallow too much fur it can turn into a very serious medical emergency. If a bunny has a mass of fur in its stomach that cannot pass, often it will require surgery to remove it. However, in speaking with vets, we have learned that many rabbits do not survive this surgery or if they do survive the surgery, they often pass away during the recovery process. You should brush/groom your bunny every day (sometimes even multiple times a day) when they are shedding heavily and at least once a week when they are not shedding heavily. Getting rid of as much loose fur as you can by brushing them can help prevent blockages. Brushing regularly also helps prevent mats from forming. Everyone has their own preference as to what type of brush works best for their bunny, but a very popular option is the HairBuster Comb. A rabbit’s skin is very delicate so stay away from brushes with sharp, wire tips. Whichever brush you decide to use, always brush gently so as not to puncture, irritate or hurt your bunny’s skin. What grooming tools work the best for your bunny? (For more grooming information, tips and resources check out our Note: https://m.facebook.com/notes/vcas-bunny-brigade/the-importance-of-grooming-your-bunny/1350204291813186/) #adoptdontshop #bunnies #rabbitcare #pets

Kiwi and Blueberry, our adorable bonded pair, are the cutest. We would say they are the perfect little snow bunnies, but since we’re in Southern California it would be more accurate to describe them as the perfect little sun bunnies. ***If you would like to meet Kiwi and Blueberry or any of our other adoptable bunnies, please email us at [email protected].*** #adoptdontshop #bunnies #houserabbits #adoptablepets

Our VCAS alum Audrey Hepbun is living her best life and having a wonderful first Thanksgiving in her forever home with her forever family. Her family has reported that they are so in love with her. Audrey is incredibly spoiled and she even gets a story read to her every day by her human sister. If that doesn’t melt your heart, we don’t know what will! #adoptdontshop #bunnies #houserabbits #adoptablepets

Congratulations to our beautiful tripod girl, Audrey Hepbun, on finding her forever home! Audrey was adopted this week by a very loving family that has experience with caring for a three-legged animal family member. She is settling into her home very nicely, as you can see by the second picture, and will live her life indoors as a very loved, spoiled and important part of her family as all bunnies should #adoptdontshop #bunnies #houserabbits #adoptablepets

Our adoptable boy Nemo apparently thinks he’s a parrot. Just like adoptable Cinnabun from our previous post, our volunteer was sitting on the floor with him when he decided to crawl up and perch on her shoulders. Polly may want a cracker but Nemo want a carrot! (Disclaimer-do not let your bunny crawl on your shoulders unless you are on the floor with them and lean completely over when they want to hop off. Bunnies have very delicate bones that can break easily. You never wan...t your bunny to jump off of you or anything from an unsafe height.) ***If you would like to meet Nemo or any of our other adoptable bunnies, please email us at [email protected].*** #adoptdontshop #bunnies #houserabbits #adoptablepets

VCAS alum Oates is working hard for his treats! Did you know that environmental enrichment is very important for your bunny’s health and well-being? If bunnies don’t have enough space to explore and toys to play with they will get bored and bored bunnies can become very destructive and even depressed. Rabbits need bunny safe toys they can toss around and destroy such as empty toilet paper tubes filled with hay, cardboard boxes, grass mats, plastic baby keys, untreated pine c...ones, dig boxes and logic toys like what sweet Oates is playing with. Some excellent options for buying safe toys for your bunnies to keep them happy and stimulated are: Oxbow Animal Health https://www.oxbowanimalhealth.com//spec/rabbits/enrichment Bunny Bunch Rabbit Rescue https://www.bunnybunchboutique.com/ San Diego House Rabbit Society, Inc https://san-diego-house-rabbit-society.square.site/s/toys/5 House Rabbit Society https://my-site-105432-100170.square.site/ For logic toys, check out these links: http://bunnyproof.com/best-bunny-logic-toys.html https://bit.ly/3pwQVzK And finally, the following is a great resource for how to make your bunny a dig box: http://bunnyproof.com/how-to-build-bunny-digging-box.html. We want to give a HUGE thank you to the amazing Rabbit Rescue Inc. for taking in 5 of our shelter bunnies to help us free up space for more homeless bunnies. Licorice, Ladybug, Opal, Mischief and Snowball will receive the most loving, expert care by the Rabbit Rescue volunteers while they wait to find their forever homes We also want to thank our awesome Bunny Brigade volunteer for driving our sweet shelter bunnies safely down there. Due to the RHDV outbreak we are still n...ot able to offer bunny dates at the shelter but Rabbit Rescue Inc. is able to at their facility so if you would like to adopt a friend for your bunny we highly recommend contacting them. They are extremely knowledgeable and experienced with all things bunny and have tons of amazing bunnies at their rescue just waiting for a loving, forever home of their own. #adoptdontshop #bunnies #houserabbits #adoptablepets

Recall Alert The following statement is from the House Rabbit Society: The Food & Drug Administration has posted a notice that Tanimura & Antle Inc. is voluntarily recalling select single heads of romaine lettuce distributed across the country for possible E. Coli contamination. ... Cartons of potentially affected product were distributed in Puerto Rico and the following 19 states: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. The affected lettuce is labeled with a packed on date of 10/15/2020 or 10/16/2020. The UPC number on the lettuce is 0-27918-20314-9. Tanimura & Antle said in its announcement it's "unlikely that this product remains at retail establishments due to the shelf life of lettuce and the number of days that have passed" but is issuing a recall out of an abundance of precaution. The company asks if a consumer has any of the packaged lettuce described above that the product be disposed of. #recall #food #bunnies

Did you know that adoptable Licorice is a trained therapist? She is famous for her listening skills (thanks to her magnificent ears) and her attention to detail is impeccable. She’s so good that she even has some celebrity clients, but we cannot reveal their names due to legal reasons. It would be unethical for us to let slip that one of her satisfied clients is America’s Sweetheart, the adoptable Audrey Hepbun from our last post...wait, oops. You didn’t hear that from us!
