In 1988 Steve Varner was approached by Playmates to help design a toy version of the Turtles. The figure on the right was brought to the first meeting as a prototype, and it was approved to go forward with minor changes. The tail was removed, it was given articulation, and it turned into the figure on the left - the first series of production Turtles. . . .
