Ms. Aparicio was studying to be a teacher when her sister urged her to attend a casting call for the movie Roma in her hometown of Tlaxiaco, Mexico.... As the @latimes said, She has made history with a role that has had a ripple effect throughout Mexican society and beyond. ‘Roma’ has launched discussions about the treatment of domestic workers and indigenous representation. Aparicio has appeared in high-fashion shoots for glossies such as Vogue Mexico, publications where the standard of beauty still leans hard to the white. ‘I want to believe that in the future, they will continue to include more and more people like me, she says, so that someone else can look at it and say, ‘Hey, I look like her.’ Hoy, en honor al Día de los Pueblos Indígenas y al Mes de la Herencia Hispana / Latinx, celebramos a la actriz Yalitza Aparicio, ¡la primera mujer indígena y la segunda actriz mexicana en recibir una nominación al Oscar a la Mejor Actriz! Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day! Today, we honor and celebrate the past, present, and futures of Native Peoples, including their histories, cultures, contributions, and resilience. Despite a government-sanctioned war of extermination over hundreds of years, Indigenous Peoples have persisted and continue to protect their cultural traditions, languages, and land. Today, according to the National Congress of American Indians, there are 574 federally recognized Indian Nations (v...ariously called tribes, nations, bands, pueblos, communities and native villages) in the United States. Approximately 229 of these ethnically, culturally and linguistically diverse nations are located in Alaska; the other federally recognized tribes are located in 35 other states. From systems of government to medicine, Native peoples and their contributions have shaped and continue to influence many elements of our lives. At Bright Star, as we strive for equity and work to become an antiracist organization, our focus must also include Indigenous and Native Peoples. Indigenous scholar Dr. Debbie Reese @dreese_nambe reminds us, In many school districts, instruction and stories about Native peoples are limited to Columbus Day or November (Native American month) or Thanksgiving. Native peoples are Native all year long and information about them should be included year-round.
