With extreme heat coming to CA, remember you can help prevent blackouts! Conserve energy (if you can) between 4-9pm by pre-cooling your home; using major appliances like dishwashers & clothes dryers earlier in the day or late at night; charge EVs & electronic devices overnight.

Did you know? #FlagDay is celebrated annually on June 14 to commemorate the anniversary of the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States? It was adopted by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. The more you know.

Every February, the United States commemorates African Americans who have overcome adversity throughout history and gone on to inspire others. #BlackHistoryMonth is about togetherness, and the people who have shown us that our differences and diversity are what ultimately make us a stronger and more compassionate country. This sentiment is close to us at VCE as we continue to celebrate inclusion and diversity as one of our Power Values. Our employees’ individual differences help fuel innovation and understanding so we can best serve each other and our customers. In celebration of Black History Month, we are highlighting African Americans who have made significant impacts on the energy industry. Throughout February, we will feature inspiring individuals who inspired us to carry on their legacy- keep an eye out!

Today, VCE acknowledges and celebrates the important steps we have made toward freedom and equality as a nation and recognizes the importance of preserving and advocating for equality and justice for all. National Freedom Day celebrates the signing of the 13th amendment to the United States Constitution by President Abraham Lincoln in 1865. The 13th amendment was proposed to abolish slavery in the United States. The amendment was ultimately ratified on December 18th, 1865, roughly 7 months after the end of the Civil War, thus formally outlawing slavery in the nation. #NationalFreedomDay

The recent storm left behind a significant number of downed trees, branches and other debris. Please see these important updates regarding storm debris: Cit...y crews and contractors have been working to clear the roadways and paths of travel first, as clearing roadways is the highest priority. Please see the City’s Storm webpage for information on reporting downed trees and other hazards. https://www.cityofdavis.org//Componen/News/News/7354/2985 Recology is wrapping up on-street yard material collection this week, and the next collection will occur as planned the week of February 8. This will give everyone plenty of time to prepare fallen debris and get them into manageable piles. Due to the amount of debris left behind by the storm, yard material piles may be placed in the street at any time, regardless of your pickup day. The City will not be issuing citations at this time (and at this time only) for piles that are placed out early. Given the size of branches that have been falling, we ask that residents be sure to chop up large branches so that the piles placed in the street are properly sized for collection (piles must be no larger than 5’x5’x5’). Branches and trunks larger than 8 in diameter cannot go into the organics cart or in yard material piles. Residents can use, sell or give these away as firewood, bring these to the landfill, or (if they will fit) they can be placed in your trash cart. We've had lots of rain and more is on the way! Please make sure yard material piles are not placed directly in the gutter where they can impede rainwater from flowing to the stormdrains and lead to localized flooding. Please be aware that yard material piles can create serious hazards for cyclists. Yard material piles may not be placed in any portion of a bike lane. Due to the extensive amount of material in the street, Recology may run a little behind schedule with on-street yard material collection the week of February 8. All properly sized and placed piles will be collected. Recology will get a head start on collection by having crews begin collecting piles next Thursday, Friday and Saturday (February 4-6). When that occurs, rest assured that they still will come back to your neighborhood as scheduled the week of February 8 to collect piles as well. The City has asked Recology to sweep streets the week of February 15 instead of next week (the week of February 1) as previously planned. This will allow the street to be cleaned after the piles of storm debris are removed. Please continue to fill your brown-lidded organics cart with leaves, sticks and other debris, These will still be collected weekly. Keeping smaller debris off the street helps to speed pile collection and reduce localized flooding. See more

Happy election day! Here are some local dropboxes and our polling locations in Yolo. Thank you to Jesse Salinas, our council members and our local elections office in Yolo for working to put Winters and Esparto on the map even though our populace didn't merit a ballot box based on size.
