This is Barack Obama the 44th Presidet of the United States. Before he became the first African American President he was a U.S. Senator for the state of Illinois. As a teenager, he began to discover his black identity through basketball. During his presidency, he tamed the Great Recession, rescued the auto industry and created a health care reform law.

6th Grade will be participating in the 1st ever Virtual Olympics on Wednesday and Thursday!!!! Check out these student created posters.

This is Jesse Owens he was a track and field athlete. In the 1936 Olympics black athletes had to prove themselves athletically equal to whites. Hitler believed that no dark skinned person could compete with the "Aryan master race" this was proven wrong when Jesse set records in the 100 meter dash, 200 meter sprint, 400 meter relay and long jump!

This is Dr. Mae Jemison she is the first African American female astronaut. Her job in space was conducting crew related scientific experiments. She was admitted to NASA in 1987. In 1992, Dr. Jemison flew on the Endeavour making her the first African American woman in space. She received several awards and honorary doctorates.
