Over the past four years, the outgoing administration made changes to immigration policies that make it harder and more expensive for lawful permanent residents to become U.S. Citizens. Besides their anti-immigrant and nationalist agenda, this is a deep form of voter suppression as it is designed to prevent people from becoming eligible voters. UURISE is proud to be a founding member of the San Diego Citizenship Collaborative - SDCC along with our partners at Employee Rights... Center, Catholic Charities Diocese Of San Diego, International Rescue Committee in San Diego, Jewish Family Service of San Diego, and Legal Aid Society Of San Diego, Inc. If you are available tomorrow, please join a few of us for a socially distanced fundraiser! We'd love to share a bit about the important work we do, the people we have assisted, and ways that you can get involved, even in the time of COVID! Come! Let's make the pathway to citizenship a little smoother!

DACA restored to original rules! "Judge Nicholas Garaufis of the U.S. District Court in Brooklyn instructed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to post a public notice by Monday that states the department will accept and adjudicate Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) petitions from immigrants who qualify for the program but are not currently enrolled in it. Garaufis also instructed officials to grant approved applicants work permits that last for two years, instead of the one-year period proposed by the Trump administration over the summer."

In the best news we could have hoped for, the U.S. Supreme Court has rules that the Trump Administration did not take proper steps to end the program, so for the time being, DACA continues!! From the decision written by Chief Justice John Roberts: We do not decide whether DACA or its rescission are sound policies. We address only whether the agency complied with the procedural requirement that it provide a reasoned explanation for its action.

The actions of this administration are reprehensible and amount to negligent homicide.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a new program to provide disaster assistance for undocumented immigrants, who make up roughly 10% of the state's workforce. CA is funding $75 million and philanthropic partners will fund $50 million, for a total of $125 million. The program will provide individual assistance of $500 and household assistance up to $1,000.... May California lead each state in crafting similar protection for our undocumented community members!

Wonderful news from Greyhound! "In an emailed statement, the company said it would notify the Department of Homeland Security that it does not consent to unwarranted searches on its buses or in areas of terminals that are not open to the public such as company offices or any areas a person needs a ticket to access. Greyhound said it would provide its drivers and bus station employees updated training regarding the new policy, and that it would place stickers on all its buses clearly stating that it does not consent to the searches."

More lawlessness by ICE in this latest attack on communities protecting all of their members. From the article: "Sonoma County District Attorney Jill Ravitch, ...Public Defender Kathleen Pozzi and San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin condemned the arrests for undermining public safety. Sonoma County counsel Bruce Goldstein called ICE’s actions lawless because the agents had no warrants. It’s now going to put total fear in the community, Pozzi said in an interview with the Press Democrat. People aren’t going to come to court. Victims will refuse to show up. Witnesses will refuse to show up cases will have to get dismissed.

"A federal judge issued a permanent injunction against the Border Patrol's Tucson Sector on Wednesday, telling the agency that it cannot hold migrants, including families with children, for longer than 48 hours. In his 40-page decision, U.S. District Judge David C. Bury ruled the conditions at the sector's eight stations are "presumptively punitive and violate the Constitution," and he blocked Border Patrol and parent agency U.S. Customs and Border Protection from holding people who have been processed by agents for more than 48 hours from "book-in time." "When we worry and wonder about authoritarian regimes that inflict cruelty on civilians, we often imagine tyrannical despots unilaterally advancing their sinister agendas. But no would-be autocrat can act alone. As a practical matter, he needs subordinates willing to carry out orders."
