This weekend concluded the 37th annual mock trial competition for area high schools. Over the course of five months, students take the roles of attorneys, court personnel and witnesses and prosecute and defend a criminal case. Cases are tried with real judges. They argue constitutional law in a pre-trial motion to suppress. They are coached by teachers and volunteer attorneys. They learn to examine, cross-examine, make opening and closing statements, object, and to navigate through the hearsay rule. So wonderful to associate with these great kids. Some go on to careers in law. This year, for the first time, a junior high, Fruitvale, competed. Here’s my alma mater, the Highland team. Go Scots!

Interesting from both a music perspective and a financial perspective. Another example of our changing times. https://www.washingtonpost.com//the-slow-secret-death-of/

My sincere condolences to the friends and family of attorney Benjamin Greene, who died very near the finish line of the Bakersfield Track Club Summer Series 5K last night. And just some thoughts for what they're worth. I was walking it and did not see him pass me. But I saw a lot of runners who were really going after it notwithstanding the heat. I've been paying attention to the commentary today. Most of it is gracious. Some of it is harsh and undeserving--toward him or t...oward the Bakersfield Track Club, who conducts the event and does it very well. I feel inclined to say that I walked it last night because I questioned whether it was a good idea for ME to run. But there's the rub, because there's a hint of me suggesting I had better judgment. The truth is, last night, I had total admiration for those runners who were blasting it. I was also envious of them. The point I am trying to make is we shouldn't judge. It's really easy to express outrage that the event wasn't cancelled. Really easy. But it's wrong. Everybody who participated last night made an individual choice. Some chose not to. Some held back. Some went for it with total gusto. I think all of those choices were right ones. For the life of me I cannot comprehend people publicly criticizing Mr. Greene's legal abilities today online. I hope his family can find peace. There will be many who will step in to bless that family's life. He was 48. See more
