Seasonal precipitation and multiple weeks of training have allowed a cooperative fuels reduction project to begin today, November 21, 2020. The prescribed fire activity (pile burning) is taking place north of Quincy, west of Highway 70, between Feather River College and the Mt. Hough Ranger Station. This project is intended to remove hazardous fuels within the wildland urban interface (WUI) and enhance firefighting capabilities near the communities of Elizabethtown and Quincy.... Smoke may be visible along CA Hwy 70 and throughout American Valley and surrounding communities. Fuels reduction around communities can make a difference. As an example, treatments completed along La Porte Road (east Quincy) reduced the intensity of the North Complex as it burned through the area, allowing firefighters to safely remain, despite high intensity fire. For more information about the cooperative effort, involving multiple agencies, non-profit organizations and educational institutions, please see www.plumasfiresafe.org/trex-info . #PrescribedFire #PlumasFireSafe #PlumasNF #FRC

5:30 pm Update: Heavy precipitation has been falling steadily on the Gulch Fire in the last several hours; it is now 100% contained! Good work first responders, one and all! 3:30 pm Update: The Gulch Fire is receiving moderate, steady precipitation, is pegged at about 150 acres and is about 50% contained. A small 5-acre spot was quickly extinguished north of Hwy 70 earlier, the remainder of the fire remains south of Hwy 70. The Laura Fire which started within the town of Doyl...e and burned to the northeast, is approximately 500 acres and is burning actively on Turtle Mountain (east of Doyle towards Nevada Line). Nearby homes are being evacuated. See https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/7269/ for more information. There are two fires going in eastern Plumas and eastern Lassen County currently. Both are wind-driven (the wind is howling) and moving extremely quickly in the dry grass and brush. The Gulch Fire is near the small community of Chilcoot and is visible from CA Highway 70. The second fire is near Doyle and visible from US Hwy 395. Please pay close attention to emergency responders in the area. Expect highway closures in both areas. The Plumas County Sheriff has issued an advisory evacuation order for Chilcoot and a mandatory order for Vinton. At this time, the Gulch Fire is currently being held south of Hwy 70 at roughly 20 acres. Please follow the Lassen County Sheriff and BLM for information about the Doyle Fire.

Crews continue working on the North Complex Fire suppression repair to protect the watershed and address erosion issues. In addition to firefighters work, they have also been utilizing heavy equipment to cover up and repair dozer lines, hand lines and any other watershed issues associated with control lines that were created and necessary to fight the fire. These professional men and women are amazing.
