Newly installed on the third floor, a custom built Eisentraut tandem, c. 1975, on loan from Inductee Joe Breeze and with an interesting Davis, California connection. Al Eisentraut, now retired, was a noted frame builder in Oakland, CA. This tandem was built for Joe Breeze and Otis Guy who were soon to become well-known as two of the key Marin County mountain bike pioneers who originated much of the fat-tire, off-road sport, technology and culture. Joe and Otis rode this bi...ke to four first place finishes, 1975 - 1978, in the early Davis Double Centuries. Though never a sanctioned race, early DCs had mass starts and each finisher’s time was recorded. In 1979 they again came in first on the Ritchey-built Anchor Steamer. See their names inscribed on the original Davis Double trophy on the main floor. Joe and Otis also attempted two cross-USA record rides, once on this bike and once on the Steamer, but had to quit both times due to injuries. In 1976, Joe and Otis set an unofficial US 12-hour record of 256 miles on the ‘Traut. See more
Just added to the 3rd floor "shrine" to USBHOF inductees today: Honoring the Schwinn Family who were inducted in 1999, we display a recently donated and fully restored 1956 Schwinn Black Phantom, thanks to donor Ron Gallus. From the display text description: "'My new Phantom sure is a beauty --all the fellows say it’s the swellest-looking bike in town!' --from the 1953 Schwinn catalogue. By 1956 Schwinn touted it as the 'most beautiful bike in the world!'... "The Phantom was the company’s top-of-the-line balloon-tired bike. Schwinn even celebrated one hundred years in business in 1995 by producing a limited edition, almost exact reproduction of the cruiser. "Manufactured from 1949 to 1959, a girl’s model in two-tone blue was also available for a time. The Phantom featured a battery-powered horn and front light. For an extra fee, tail lights, expander front and rear brakes, and locking forks were available. 'Weighing in at over 70 pounds, one reason complete vintage cruisers are so valuable today is that many young owners would soon remove as much 'extraneous' weight as possible, resulting in the loss of tanks, fenders, chain guards and the like."
