USA Boat Survey 02.02.2021

It is important to take an inventory of your vessel condition, whether that is at the beginning or end or a season, or if you're about to sell your vessel. Today, let's talk about Shaft logs. Shaft logs: Dripping water? Is the packing gland adjustable or dripless? Is the hose in good condition? Are the hose clamps in good condition? Adjustable packing glands are bronze and can be repacked with flax packing. If the bronze is green, heavily corroded or covered in salt cryst...als they can be cleaned with CLR and then protected with a corrosion blocker. If the seal is dripless, sometimes the shaft will have a second set of seals on the shaft that can be installed without removing the shafts from the coupler, otherwise the vessel will need to be hauled out for repair. For more information about shaft log installation refer to ABYC P-6

Do you currently or plan to soon haul your boat out of the water for pre-winter service? This is a perfect time to have a condition & valuation survey with bottom inspection conducted. Most insurance providers require a survey report to obtain insurance. Also, most marinas along the southern California coast require a survey to rent a slip. We recently surveyed this 2002 50' Sea Ray Express Cruiser for insurance purposes. Don't delay, get a survey!

With Prepurchase surveys, we always recommend having the vessel hauled of the water so we can conduct a bottom inspection. While out of the water, we will percussion sound the bottom of the hull for signs of damage and delamination. In a addition to the hull, we will also inspect the shafts, propellers, struts, cutlass bearings, trimtabs, rudder, and thruhulls. Some vessels have more under water components than others. This 59 Carver Marquis is equipped with Naiad stabiliz...ers, Bow thruster, Stern thruster, hydraulic swim platform, and under water lights. All of these components can only be inspected with the vessel out of the water. Ready to get out on the water? Call us today! Bryan Clemons, AMS #1301 Cell 719-659-1325
