Anyone can appreciate that the stay-at-home directive has put a complete and total freeze on arranging traditional fundraising events here in the US and elsewhere. These events have been a great source of providing much-needed support to so many around the world. At VIGA - A project of Akhuwat Global, we are not only providing immediate relief such as cash, cooked meals, ration, masks, gloves, PPE to the front line workers but also Interest-free micro-loans to help micro-business owners get through this crisis. Please join us and promote the event or contribute in any which way you can to help raise the funds we need to support so many especially the daily wage earners.
Since I was a child, I loved driving a donkey cart. I got the feeling of flying from it. My elders were also in this profession. I have been working in this st...reet in Sadar, Karachi for the past 25 years. I carry cement, machinery, furniture, heavy equipment, anything you name it, said Yousuf whom I saw sitting idle on a donkey cart in front of closed shops yesterday. Guzara ho jaata hey aj kal (are you able to make a living these days)? I asked him. Look around, shops are closed and there is no load to carry. Before I used to work for 12 hours a day, these days, only 5-6 hours. My earnings are less than half now. I earn 8001000 Rupees ($56) a day, out of which, 200 Rs ($1.25) go to feed my donkey and 200 Rs for myself. Now I cannot explain lockdown to my donkey and that he should eat less because we don’t get enough work. I have to spend 200 Rupees on him no matter what, even if I have to eat less. Without him, I will surely not survive. Those who have money can sit at home, we, who drive donkey carts, cannot. Baqi Allah malik hey (rest it’s up to God). He will feed us both! What is the name of your donkey? I haven’t named him. I have never thought about it. Kabootar rakh lo is ka naam (let’s name him Kabootar [Pigeon])! a passerby whose name was Zulfiqar said with a naughty smile. Nahi, yeh tu kala hey, (no, he is black). Pigeons don’t have the same color as he has, Yousuf said. Tu phir KalaDil Wala rakh lo is ka naam (then let’s call him KalaDil Wala [BlackBig Hearted]), I suggested. Yeh theek hey, aj se is ka naam Dil Wala (that’s good. From today, his name will be Dil Wala [Big Hearted]), Yousuf said. I looked at the donkey. He nodded as if he had approved it. ......................................................... NJV School is an old school in Sadar, Karachi which Akhuwat adopted a few years ago to provide quality education to the most deserving. These days, the school a...nd its boarding are closed, but some of the school's staff is still coming to work. They prepare hundreds of meals with their own hands every day and distribute them to the area which have been severely affected by COVID-19. Sometimes, I hop on to their school van leaving for meal distributions. Yesterday, we drove to Hub Chowki, a town located at the border between Sindh and Baluchistan. This is the first-hand account of what the meal distribution looked like. When hungry people see food, no instructions on social-distancing or making queues work on them. The fear of going hungry simply takes over their primal brain. As soon as our van stopped, we were surrounded by hundreds of kids. Within 8 minutes, we had given 350 meals. We couldn't serve all of the kids. The cries and pleads of little ones are still echoing in my head. These kids didn't ask to be born poor. So whose responsibility are they now? This video is a little attempt to give you a glimpse of what I saw in Hub Chowki yesterday. Please donate to VIGA.Org www.viga.org so we can serve more people. For Heaven's Sake - Literally !!! I am shocked that in our community, educated and well informed people are still socializing , totally ignoring warnings of he...alth care professionals that COVID-19 is a highly contagious virus and just because one may not be at high risk , one through complete ignorance or indifference is willing to take the risk of facilitating the virus to end up in people who are at high risk. Our hospitals DO NOT have the space, equipment (especially ventilators) or staff to save lives that can be saved only if the system is not overloaded. In Italy due to capacity issues, doctors are now deciding who to save and who not to, what if that "who not to" happens to be you or one of your loved ones?
