COVID-19 put sustainability at a crossroads.... The pandemic has upended every facet of society, and sustainability programming is no exception. As the sustainability industry has adapted, many of us have been left wondering: How have sustainability priorities shifted? ... How can sustainability programs use this moment to build back better? What are the long term impacts of COVID-19 on sustainability commitments? Come explore these questions at a panel discussion on Thursday (10/29) from 4-5:30pm, put on by the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. Panelists include our executive director, Ben Stapleton, Susanna Kass (Data Center Advisor for the UN Sustainability Development Goals) and Eva Moir (Transportation Planning Manager at LA Metro). There's been a breakthrough in solar panel technology! Just recently, scientists have discovered a way to increase light absorption of solar panels by 125%. What's the secret? It comes down to an innovative checkerboard design that increases diffraction, allowing light to be absorbed more efficiently in its journey to become electricity. Researchers predict this increased efficiency will enable the production of 10 times more solar power with the same amount of materials. By ...incorporating the checkerboard design, solar panels of the future will be lighter, thinner, and more flexible, allowing for wider application on houses and other surfaces. Because these new panels need less materials, they will also be cheaper and more environmentally friendly to produce. Learn more here: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releas/2020//201008121326.htm
A quick recap on California's wildfire season so far... In August, a combination of extreme heat and 12,000 lightning strikes resulted in 37 fires that merged to create the August Complex, the largest California wildfire ever recorded. It has burned over 1 million acres, an amount comparable to all wildfires recorded in the state from 1932-1999. In just a few short months, a total of 4 million acres have burned across California, leaving a path of destruction almost unima...ginable. Our hope is that this record wildfire season will spur more effective forest management and aggressive political action to mitigate climate change.
