Thrilled to be in my fave place reading @patrickearlryan ‘s debut chosen by @roxanegay74 as the Flannery O’Connor Winner for Short Fiction. Patrick and I grew up together in the classrooms at SFSU and were among a handful of out gay guys who wrote fiction so people sometimes called me Patrick. I was always flattered because of the quality of his work. #queerfiction #lgbtfiction #flanneryoconnor #shortstories #sfsualumni

What Are Days? Sitting in my spot reading one of my favorite Randall Kenan stories with a title that takes on new layers during Covid and the fires. Mr. Kenan was such a great writer. Looking forward to reading his new collection just out from @w.w.norton. The teacher in me wants to share this story with students and then encourage them to study how he weaved Al Green’s song Let’s Stay Together throughout the story. I also recently read part of Walking on Water, a book he sig...ned for me. He had a long talk with me when visiting SFSU and told me to reach out to him when I landed my first book deal. Neither of us knew it would be 30ish years later, but I was still planning on sending him a note. So glad I had the opportunity, like so many queers aspiring to write, to be on the receiving end of his kindness. #blackqueerartist #randallkenan #whataredays #queerfiction #rolemodels #masterfulwriting #literaryfiction #queerwriters #queerwritersofcolor #queerwritersofinstagram See more

Heard the news and had to go nature to stave off morbid reflection. This brought me peace. Repost @poorpeoplescampaign : How do you mourn the loss of a great champion for justice like Ruth Bader Ginsburg? You mourn deeply & you vow to continue her work with even greater resolve. Her death must bring us to life. No one who loved her work on voting rights, women’s rights, or corporate responsibility can stay home & not vote. We must renew our resolve to fight as she fought. Aft...er the Supreme Court said in 1852 that a Black man has no rights a white man must respect, Frederick Douglass declared that, as monstrous as the decision was, the movement has to remember that all measures devised and executed with a view to ally & diminish the anti-slavery agitation, have only served to increase, intensify, and embolden that agitation. This might be the death that brings alive the full vote of this democracy, which could not only change the presidency but also the Senate. This might bring waffling undecided voters off of the sidelines. If McConnell over reaches, I’m believing the people will over perform, and we could see an election like never before. RBG often quoted Justice Brandeis: The greatest menace to freedom is an inert people. May she Rest In Peace. We must rise with power! -Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II @revdrbarber

Can’t wait to read. Love the quote. Repost @bombmag "Building my own world through my work was my attempt to create a culture cobbled together from failed culture." Trenton Doyle Hancock Unlocked from BOMB #153: Trenton Doyle Hancock by Bill Kartalopoulos. ... The artist’s new graphic novel delves deeper into his mythic Moundverse, where gentle plantanimal vessels are protected by TorpedoBoy and hounded by tofu-eating enemies. His new show, Something American, opens at @jamescohangallery on September 17. Read the full interview and subscribe to BOMB by clicking the link in our bio.
