"Even with 181 Fremont’s numerous complexities, its design does not overlook sustainability. The building achieved LEED Platinum pre-certification in 2014 and is on track to join a short list of skyscrapers that have earned the full designation. Wolfgang Werner, the New Yorkbased president and CEO of Urban Fabrick, the project’s LEED consultant, says the commitment of Jay Paul to support a graywater-recycling system moved the building’s LEED score past the 80-point needle fo...r a Platinum rating. According to water-reuse calculations submitted to the U.S. Green Building Council, 71% of the building’s collected graywater and rainwater is treated on site in an Aquacell graywater-treatment system. Water from sinks, baths, and washing machines is sent to a basement five floors below grade, where it’s treated before being reused for toilet and urinal flushing and drip irrigation. This saves an estimated 1.4 million gallons of water each year." See more

The William J. Worthen Foundation and the Building Decarbonization Coalition will be collaborating on a project to help non-residential designers understand how... to develop all-electric designs. The "Design Professional’s Practice Guide to Decarbonization of the Built Environment" will offer the practical knowledge architects and engineers need to understand, scope and integrate cost-effective systems in the design process. The guide will present how to evaluate alternative systems, plan for the impacts of all electric building system solutions, and how to navigate the complex Code-compliance issues that are presented by the use of natural gas systems as the baseline for Code-required energy performance. The guide will empower design professionals to think differently about HVAC and service water heating systems, and to communicate why all-electric systems should be considered. The primary goal of this Practice Guide will be to make the design, value and benefits of cost-effective integration of all-electric systems a core competency for architects and engineers. We welcome industry leaders who would like to participate in this working group to send a note of inquiry to [email protected]. #BuildingDecarbonization #environmentalstewardship #decarbonization #electrification
