Mark Your Calendars for the June Club Programs via Zoom* Tuesday June 15, 1:00 pm: Dutch or Deutsch? Tracing my Grandmother’s Roots Speaker: Anne Sonner Anne was always told that her maternal grandmother was Dutch, but it appeared more likely that her... grandmother was German. She decided to do some research to find out. Spoiler alert: the answer is both. Anne read history books, broke through genealogy brick walls, and connected a lot of family history dots for this program, which includes information about the New Netherland colony in the 1600s and the immigration of German Palantines to New York in the 1700s. As is usual for Anne’s programs, there are lots of images and interesting tangents. A graduate of Pitzer College, Anne Sonner writes for the Glendora Genealogy Group and has written 50 history articles for the Claremont United Church of Christ. Tuesday June 29, 1:00 pm: Claremont Community Development: Issues, Progress, and Challenges Speaker: Brad Johnson, Director of Community Development, City of Claremont This presentation will include an overview of the Claremont Community Development Department, recent success stories, upcoming issues, and projects and challenges in the months and years ahead. Ongoing and upcoming development proposals will be presented along with the Department’s work-plan for the next budget year. Brad Johnson has served as the Director of Community Development for Claremont since 2017. He is responsible for the Planning, Engineering, Building and Safety, and Community Improvement divisions. Brad has a degree in Urban & Regional Planning from Cal Poly Pomona and has worked for 27 years in local government throughout the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys. Currently he is the Vice-Chair of the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments Planning Director’s Technical Advisory Committee and has served in the past on the Board of Directors for Rebuilding Together San Gabriel Valley. * The public is invited to our programs. Members will receive the link via email. Guests may receive the Zoom link by contacting Mel Boynton at [email protected]

Secrets of the Hidden Universe presented by Brian Shuve of Harvey Mudd College Tuesday, May 25th at 1:00 on Zoom* Speaker: Brian Shuve, Assistant Professor of... Physics, Harvey Mudd College Dr. Shuve will describe what is known about dark matter, what secrets this hidden part of the universe might hold regarding the laws of nature and the origin and structure of the universe. He will then demonstrate how he and his students are using simulations and experimental data from high-energy particle colliders to uncover these secrets. Dr. Shuve obtained his bachelor’s degree in Engineering Science from the University of Toronto and his Ph.D. in Physics from Harvard University. Dr. Shuve also carried out postdoctoral research at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Canada. He is broadly interested in particle physics, with particular interests in dark matter, antimatter, and particle colliders, and also in the societal impacts of science and the sociology of how we do it. His hobbies include hiking, music (singing and playing the piano), cooking, and eating (probably more so than cooking). Dr. Shuve has been named a 2021 Cottrell Scholar, an award given each year to 25 outstanding teacher-scholars in chemistry, physics, and astronomy by the Research Corporation for Science Advancement. *The Zoom link will be distributed to club members by email. Guests may contact [email protected] to receive the link.

Two of the Boynton brothers were members of the University Club. Be ready to see Claremont with few trees and people but with a few structures that still survive. Mel Boynton retired to Claremont in 2003 after a career in public service. One of his positions was as the Technology Manager with the Minnesota Historical Society for five years, where he deepened his appreciation for preserving history. *Zoom link will be distributed to club members by email.
