Eugene Goodman is a police officer and veteran, but after facing down a mob of rioters storming the Capital, many are referring to him as a hero. The union, which represents about 800 prosecutors, sought a court order that would compel Gascón to rescind the directives and declare them invalid and illegal, as well as a temporary restraining order that would bar Gascón and his administration from enforcing the directives. Gascón said in a statement Wednesday that voters had endorsed his promise to renounce sentencing enhancements, which he argued only drive recidivism and create more victims of crime in the long run. Gascón said he was extending to his deputies a sincere invitation to join me in making these much-needed changes changes that would require some fine-tuning and a tolerance for change.latimes.com #losangeles #georgegascón

Ohio National Guard members covering shifts for COVID-positive guards in state prisons are receiving just a single day of formal training before interacting with prisonersa fraction of the training for regular corrections officers. And some are using force even with so little training. We had basically no training, we really just kind of got thrown into the fire, one guard member said. In the November edition of the Journal of Public Economics, Aurélie Ouss, assistant professor of criminology at the University of Pennsylvania, found reforms implemented in California in the mid-1990s that increased the cost for counties to incarcerate children lead to a significant drop in children being sent to juvenile prisons. California lawmakers passed Senate Bill 681, or juvenile justice realignment, in 1996. Prior to the reform, counties paid a flat fee of $25 per ...month to incarcerate a child. The new law created a sliding scale, which required that counties pay between $150 a month to incarcerate children convicted of the most serious offenses like murder or armed robbery to $2,600 a month for parole violations or misdemeanor convictions. Upon its adoption in August, the law resulted in an almost immediate drop in new admissions to youth facilities: The likelihood that a child would be incarcerated in a state juvenile prison fell by more than 40 percent during the four years following the reform.the appeal.org Link to article: https://theappeal.org/shifting-incarceration-costs-to-coun/ #prison #california #schoolsnotprisons
