Gathering During a Pandemic June 03, 2020 If you’ve spent time attending camps or retreats, the memories of your group sitting casually around the campfire, going through the buffet line in the dining hall, or crowding around a table playing games, are plentiful. For us, throughout the years, these have been everyday occurrences at our facilities, and ones we value and miss. However, in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.... How we gather will look and feel different than it has any other time in our lives. You can anticipate some of the new norms we will be implementing as we move towards opening: We will be limiting the number of guests in a cabin or dorm, to lessen crowding. We will be wearing masks when meeting in groups. We will be sanitizing common areas and bathrooms more frequently. Diners will be seated in small groups with plated or family style meals in lieu of buffet bars. We will be requiring guests to bring masks with them and, yes, we’ll have some on site for sale for those who forget. Questionnaires for guests will be answered before arrival to mitigate any recent exposure to the virus. Soon we will say, Remember when we wore masks at camp? or During the pandemic, there were only 3 of us in each cabin! It may feel like a daunting task to handle so many precautionary measures. However, these are our best practices using guidelines from the CDC as well as the American Camp Association to assist in safer environments and responsible courses of action so guests can convene once again. These procedures and efforts will influence our personal and communal practices for a while, even as Covid-19 recedes. Though we think more attention to personal hygiene and more frequent sanitizing of common surfaces will likely become more a part of our everyday lives. In the meantime, we look forward to welcoming you and your family or group back to our facility and into the beautiful outdoor settings which nourish body and soul. We are ready for you. United Camps, Conferences & Retreats premier outdoor education program, Web of Life Field (WOLF) School for kids K-8th grade, are partnering with O'Neill Sea Odyssey, The Diversity Center - Santa Cruz County and Watsonville Wetlands Watch, with a generous donation from Community Foundation Santa Cruz County to create this LGBTQ Watershed Educators Alliance. Many LGBTQ+ adults who experienced nature as children did not feel comfortable being "out" in those environments and do ...not feel connected to nature as part of their identity as a result. According to the Journal of Environmental Education on Gender and Environmental Learning, environmental education is not immune from systems of gender oppression, and according to the Safe Schools Project, inclusive learning environments for LGBTQ+ youth ensure that students "see themselves reflected in lessons and create opportunities for all students to gain a more complex and authentic understanding of the world." Outdoor environments can be places of freedom and intersectional sustainability learning, where young people are liberated from behaving according to oppressive norms and identities. By working closely with the Diversity Center, O'Neill Sea Odyssey, Watsonville Wetlands Watch, and Web of Life Field (WOLF) School will take a deep dive into our language, pronoun use, our policies, and our science curriculum in terms of how we represent the incredible diversity of our more-than-human world. We are excited to share our learning with you all throughout 2020 and beyond!
