A horrifying massacre of 19 indigenous immigrants including four women and a child took place in Ciudad Camargo, Tamaulipas, just a few miles south of the Rio G...rande River and the U.S. border with Texas on January 22. This is not an isolated incident. It is the 5th mass killing of a group of immigrants passing through Mexico in the last ten years and it underlines the humanitarian disaster that has been exacerbated by harsh U.S. border policy that grew sharply worse during the Trump years. Thousands of the migrants fleeing violence in Central America are blocked from seeking international humanitarian protection unless they abandon their home countries. The U.S. should establish flexible mechanisms that allow individuals who face threats of violence, repression, and death to legally apply for asylum at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate in their country of origin.
