Un-Scripted Theater Company 27.06.2021

The Un-Scripted Theater Company is proud to welcome Erica as our newest member of our staff. With the possibility of theater maybe opening back up in the latter part of 2021, we are incredibly fortunate to have Erica as part of the team. Not only is she an amazing improvisor, but she's also a talented theater management team member, as well as a vocal proponent for our BIPOC community. We are super excited to have Erica on staff at Un-Scripted.

Swipe-Right fundraiser for Performing Arts Workshop (SF) Powered by Restream https://restream.io/ Un-Scripted Theater Company Benefit Show -- All Proceeds Go to Performing Arts Workshop (SF)... Can't leave the house to meet your match? Neither can our daters! It's 2021 and we're in a pandemic! Needless to say, online dating and the search for love is looking a little different these days...but the good folks at the Un-Scripted Theater Company have some improv fun up their sleeves for the most hilariously romantic Valentine's Day you can have at home. Fan favorite Swipe Right is back for a very special Quarantine Valentine edition, ready to make you laugh all the laughs and feel all the feels. Join us for a fully improvised show about the craziness of online dating and the eternal search for love...and everything else...in San Francisco. Previously seen in 5 sold-out SF runs as well as SF Sketchfest, SF Improv Festival, Improvaganza Festival of Hawaii, and Femprovisor Fest, among others! Note: Because this is a benefit show, all ticket prices are by donation, and 100% OF THE PROCEEDS will go to San Francisco's Performing Arts Workshop: Performing Arts Workshop is a nonprofit organization established in 1965 with a mission to help young people develop critical thinking, creative expression and essential learning skills through the arts. Today, the Workshop brings sequential arts instruction grounded in inquiry and reflection to more than 4,200 students ages 3-18 each year. Our artists conduct 11-60 session residencies in world dance, music, spoken word poetry, and theater arts. To advance equity in education, we prioritize working with communities with fewer arts education resources available to them. The Workshop’s success in youth development-based arts education has been recognized by UNESCO, the U.S. Department of Education, and the National Endowment for the Arts and has been featured in Youth Today magazine and IssueLab, an online journal for research on promising social practices. Performing Arts Workshop has been honored four times by the California State Senate and Assembly and twice by the City of San Francisco for its work with youth. Looking around at our culture in San Francisco in 2020, it's easy to see how our society is designed to keep white cis gendered hetronormitive males comfortable. We live in a very diverse and rich society, yet everyone outside of that very narrow description has been forced to navigate their way onto the improv stage with a thick enough skin to survive the micro and macro aggressions of the status quo. But with the death of George Floyd on May 25, American society as a whole ...is questioning a system that keeps such a small slice of our population comfortable at the expense of so many. For the improv community it means looking at our stories and rooting out the tired tropes that have led to the marginalizing of BIPOC identifying performers. As the the authors of the BIPOC Equity Action Plan put it, "We see distressing patterns of the insidious ways white supremacy, capitalism, misogyny, cis-hetero patriarchy, and anti-Blackness function within the very industry that promises to celebrate difference, creativity, and storytelling". Once you start looking its easy to see the intersectionality of the changes that need to be made. Humans don't like to confront societal biases, yet we can't let our fear of challenging the comfort levels of the status quo stand in the way of change. Some of us are forced to be confronted by societal biases on a daily basis, and it's long past time that those of us who don't usually have to talk about race, or gender, or sexual orientation join the conversation. Improv is an amazing tool for telling stories, and our stories going forward need to be actively pushing for a more inclusive society, especially for our BIPOC cast members. Black lives matter! They matter more than our fear of having our comfort challenged. See more

We stand in solidarity with all who are angry, exhausted, and in pain over the recent murders of Ahmaud Arbery, shot while jogging in February; Breonna Taylor, shot in her home in March by Louisville police officers; and George Floyd, killed last week by a police officer in Minneapolis. While these murders affect us all, we know that for our black community members, the pain and trauma are especially deep. It is time for both reflection and action. We have long known that th...e San Francisco improv community, Un-Scripted included, is not representative of the diversity of the Bay Area. Stories are missing from our stage that are crying out to be told. We are committed to re-doubling our efforts to include more voices in our theater. We are an organization that is dedicated to hearing feedback, even if it challenges us. We invite our community to let us know where we have fallen short, and how we can do better. But intentions, commitments, and hope are not the same as strategy. In our next communication, we will outline concrete steps Un-Scripted will take to fight injustice and promote antiracism and equity. In the meantime, our staff and Board of Directors have committed to immediate online trainings with SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice) Bay Area as a first step towards understanding and avoiding the type of gatekeeping that privilege brings to the improv stage. We know a lot of you are looking for ways to step up right now. If you are looking for organizations working for justice for BIPOC, we recommend a few below. Un-Scripted Theater Company ensemble members will match any funds donated to these organizations up to $2000. Please email your donation receipt to [email protected] if you would like your donation matched. We stand together with all those fighting to end systemic racial oppression. We are listening.
