UCSD Cross-Cultural Center 12.11.2020

During each quarter, the interns at UCSD's Cross-Cultural Center write articles to share with the community. This quarter's theme is "Unlearning the Binary." Unlearning the Binary challenges the societal norms that hold expectations depending on our identities. Here, we look past those conformities and free ourselves to step out of the labels and boxes.... Today we are featuring Fatima Fidah's (Outreach and Engagement Intern + Social Justice Educator) "It's not so Black and White ." This blog is about how if we don't break down the Black and white binary, we'll never see the full picture.

"Think About it Thursday" is a bi-weekly series highlighting current events or social movements This week, we are highlighting #EndSARS. Slide 1: Think About It Thursdays: #EndSARS Slide 2: What is SARS?... "SARS (Special Anti Robbery Squad) is a branch of the Nigeria Police Force. SARS officers carry guns but do not wear Nigerian police uniforms or badges. Since the creation of SARS, they have been known for engaging in illegal acts and torturing the citizens of Nigeria. They ask for bribes, extort, harass, kidnap, rape and even kill citizens. Over the years, there have been public records of SARS units committing acts of corruption and malpractice across the country. Despite this, the Nigerian government has failed to take action. On Wednesday, young people in Lagos took to the streets and began protesting for the end of SARS, the end of injustice and the end of death at the hands of Nigerian Police. Nigerian youth in Abuja, Ibadan, Benin, Delta and other cities across the country have also taken to the streets to demand change and the total disbandment of the SARS police unit. Slide 3: Origin of SARS By 1992, when SARS was founded, the precedent of controlling Nigerian people through excessive force had long been the norm: British colonizers had arrived in the 19th century and treated the land and its people as resources to be controlled and plundered. Their colonial enterprise had left behind a culture of violence and corruption so that even after Nigeria won independence in 1960, military coups became the norm. The army held power in Nigeria for much of three decades until 1999, including when SARS, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, was created. Slide 4: Testminials Images (Twitter) See more
