National Society of Leadership and Success 12.07.2021

Hello, everyone! I just want to address some concerns that students have about NSLS here and be completely transparent. We are not a scam and we genuinely care about our members. Invitations were sent out to those who had 2.9+ GPAs. It used to be 3.0+, but we brought it down because of the pandemic. I agree that this isn't a high requirement-- especially for UCSB standards. However, it does demonstrate leadership potential in a student. Many are wondering why there's a membe...rship fee even though the organization is non-profit. That's because the student chapter itself is non-profit but the headquarters is for-profit. But don't let that make you think that NSLS is only after your money. I've worked with many great people at the headquarters who live humbly and have families and necessities to take care of. Having guest speakers and hosting events require money. If it weren't for the membership fees, NSLS would not be able to function and offer the perks that comes with being a member. So what are the perks? I mainly joined because I knew that employers look for those with leadership qualities. Being able to put NSLS on my resume checks that box. Becoming a part of the executive board is the cherry on top. Other benefits include discounts to places such as Woodstocks and Sam's to Go in IV. Members can also get personalized letters of recommendations, scholarships, access to all past speaker broadcasts, a job bank, and so much more! The scholarship applications are the easiest I have ever seen because they don't require letters of recommendation nor transcripts. The most work you'll have to do is write a two-page essay. Amidst the pandemic, it's impossible having in-person events and mingle with each other. Hence, posting chapter-related things is difficult. That's why almost all of the posts now appear as if they are from the headquarters. Once we can have in-person events again, we will have more posts that are specific to our chapter. Another concern that many students have is the advisor's email. As a student organization, we need to have an advisor employed by UCSB. I was lucky to be able to have my professor sign up, but she didn't want to have too much work since this was completely voluntary and she didn't get paid to do this. This is why we used the NSLS gmail instead of her email. Unfortunately, she resigned because too many students were asking about whether or not we were legit using her UCSB email. Please email me instead if you have any further questions. Lastly, many students are unsubscribing from the UCSB emailing services. Please tell your friends not to do this because this is how students get coronavirus and other emergency updates!! To those who have already joined, I look forward to seeing you guys at orientation (on March 1st at 10 AM and March 3rd at 6:30 PM)

Meet one of our student marketing representatives! Hi guys! My name is Nicolette Ayoub and I am a Marketing Rep for the UCSB Chapter of NSLS. I joined the org because I wanted to improve my leadership skills, hear from industry experts and try new things! As a transfer student and senior at UCSB, the org has really helped me to stay involved within the campus community and manifest goals with the help of networking teams. Right now I’m taking the Advanced Leadership Certificate offered for free with the membership! To anyone interested in standing out to potential employers or even just wanting to stay connected during this crazy time, I highly recommend joining! One of the perks of joining NSLS is that you can have a paid internship with us!

Why is goal-setting so important for college students? Jeff Selingo, a New York Times best selling author about higher education, says the majority of college students go through college without much intentionality. In other words, college students are setting long-term goals or taking action to see them through. Read this blog post for Graham C. Knowles about how to set SMART goals and actually following through on them: https://hubs.la/H0CJbL_0 #Goals, #Leadership, #thensls, @thensls, #ucsb

SMART goals are great, but they're not always the best goal-setting technique. For example, the SMART goal approach focuses on results and binary outcomes. This requires a lot of planning and analysis before getting started, which can create "analysis paralysis." Discover how the PACT goal-setting technique helps you focus on output so you can get started right away and reasses later: https://hubs.la/H0CJbMN0 #Goals, #thensls, @thensls, #ucsb, #gogauchos
