"As a part of our current project, the Youth Advisory Council is working to promote community unity. We have put together a fundraiser to support Pillars of the Community. Pillars of the Community strives for the liberation of unjustly criminalized minorities who lack representation in our broken justice system. This San Diego initiative aims to fight mass incarceration, systemic oppression, & police brutality, to name just a few of their initiatives. This nonprofit organiza...tion uses its platform & resources to engage and educate the community of our current problems. With their Bridge to Education Program, Prison Outreach Program, Bridge to Work Program, & many more, we guarantee you this organization solidifies a more unified San Diego. With your aid, this organization can actively & effectively engage in the problems we must deliberately fight against. The method of donation will be through their website at www.potcsd.org/donate . The amount you donate will determine the number of tickets that will be placed in the raffle under your name. To be entered into the raffle, screenshot your donation transaction and send it to our instagram @ucsandiegoyouth or email it to [email protected]. Some raffle items include waterproof bluetooth speakers, a hydro flask travel mug, a Fire tablet, and more.

"We are young black men from the East African community of City Heights in San Diego. Because of our immigrant backgrounds, we have a different perspective from many of our African American peers. Some of us were born in East Africa and came to the United States as kids, and some of us are the children of refugees who fled to the U.S. from war-torn countries."

Sojourner Truth was an abolitionist and women’s rights activist. Truth was born a slave, she was bought and sold four times. In 1826, Truth escaped to an abolitionist family with her infant daughter Sophia. The family bought her freedom and helped her gain the return of her five-year-old son Peter, who had been illegally sold. Truth was the first black woman to win a court case against a white man. In 1844, she joined the Northampton Association of Education and Industry, whi...ch was an organization founded by abolitionists that supported women’s rights, religious tolerance, and pacifism. She met William Lloyd Garrison, Frederick Douglass, and David Ruggles through this organization, who all encouraged her to deliver her first anti-slavery speech that year. Truth delivered her famous Ain’t I a Woman? speech in 1851 at a women’s rights conference in Akron Ohio, where she challenged prevailing notions of racial and gender inferiority and inequality. . #womenshistorymonth #sojournertruth #womenempowerment #ucsd #refugeehealth #publichealth #healthequity #globalhealth #womensrights See more
