A natural disaster has many shapes and forms. Today it’s COVID19 and the California fires for TYPHOON. Our business name is derived from a natural disaster too. In nature a typhoon is a type of storm. Many specific forces including evaporation of water, wind direction, surrounding temperatures and pressures must perfectly combine to create a typhoon. A ring of wind and clouds encircle the center or the "eye". After a storm, the animals, plants and other elements that remain m...ust evolve or be strong enough in order to still be in place or survive the next one. Our studio design process, like a typhoon, begins in the center of a complex series of outside factors and feedback systems. Ecological, economic, social and cultural factors inevitably influence every project, as do the client, architect, and contractor. By designing with the chaos and complexity of a storm, we give rise to a sustainable and lasting product. This is a view from our temporary home in Santa Cruz. The air quality at the moment is 326, we actually have a monitor located on our building. This is a view looking east toward the San Lorenzo river downtown. Usually we can see far beyond the tree line to the Santa Cruz mountains. Today, it is completely invisible. This came after a moment last night where we saw a sunset and blue sky for the first time in 4 days. The fire at the CZU lightening complex is 8% contained. Praying for our state and all the families, homes, thousands of years old trees, wild and domesticated animals.

If you don’t already have a forced air system, try this dyi hack to get fresh air into your home without the ash and smoke. You will need: Measuring tape (or string and with marking) to get the width of your window... From the hardware store: Filter slightly under sized to your window Painters tape (delicate should be good enough and better for paint) A fan

I happened upon this incredible story about Conceptos Plasticos, architects who created affordable homes for vulnerable populations with recycled plastic! So inspiring! https://www.greatbigstory.com/stories/ubs-plastic-homes

Working from home is the new norm... And here is an awesome place to do it. A new concept design in the works, this rear yard cottage with a sweeping view of San Francisco would sit perched on a steep backyard slope, and provide an oasis to a small family for visitors or WFH-ers. To avoid any crazy utility trenching we will just bring electricity to the building, provide a dry composting toilet (nicer than you’d think), and a small reservoir for a sink which can provide grey water to the yard. Even fits a pull out couch with a king sized bed! #tinyhouse #offthegrid #netzero #conceptdesign #backyardstudio
