At Tuesday’s Board of Trustees meeting, two new administrators were approved effective July 1, 2021 for the new school year: Ericka TschantzDirector of Special Education. Ericka started her career in Special Education as a SDC Teacher Autism/Moderate-Severe for Lodi Unified in 2009, and then joined Modesto City Schools in 2011 where she became a Program Manager shortly thereafter. TUSD began witnessing Ericka’s leadership in 2018 as a Program Specialist where she has conti...nued to support the Special Education Department with Speech, Resource, SDC mild/moderate and moderate/severe & pre-formal Autism students. Additionally, Ericka has furthered her leadership outside of TUSD with participation on a variety of SELPA committees. Ericka’s Gallup Strengths of Input, Learner, Achiever, Responsibility, and Context will continue to foster a collaborative approach with students, families, and staff as we strive to meet students’ unique needs. Candace LooneyAssistant Principal Medeiros Elementary School. Candace started her teaching career in 2013 in Ceres and joined the Walnut Elementary family in August, 2018. Candace’s background in speech communications and elementary education has provided her leadership as a PLC lead in addition to creating and advising the Young Coders Club, establishing a literacy initiative, and furthering the STEAM focus through electives. Candace’s Gallup Strengths of Focus, Discipline, Restorative, Woo, and Positivity will benefit the Medeiros community as we strive to increase expectations for stakeholder opportunities and engagement. It’s exciting to see our colleagues growing with the US in TUSD. Congratulations to each of them. #TUSD

The California Department of Public Health is closely following the rate of immunizations during the pandemic. California law requires children to be immunized and immunization requirements for admission to schools in California for the 2020-2021 school year currently remain in place. Children are exempt from immunization requirements only if a parent or guardian submits a written statement from a licensed physician. CDPH also recommends a yearly flu vaccine to protect against seasonal flu. If you have any questions or comments please contact your School Nurse. #TUSD http://www.turlock.k12.ca.us/immunizations

We are excited to welcome our TK-3rd graders to Toolbox Time! If your student is struggling with managing feelings, having a hard time adjusting to distance learning, is nervous about coming back to school, or just wants more time to connect with other kids, please join us. Each week, Toolbox Time will be a chance to focus on learning more about our Toolbox Tools, and how they can help us cope with the many changes and challenges we have been facing. Toolbox Time is open to ...any TK-3 student and you are welcome to join any week you would like (it is not a closed group). It will be led by June Contreras, a school counseling intern with our CARE Program. A new feature in our TUSD Weekly Update will be devoted to decoding some of the information in our reopening plans specifically as it relates to COVID-19. This week the focus will be on triggers to distance learning. A common query in our Ask Me a Question Instagram story relates to how school reopening is affected by tier assignments (e.g., purple, red, orange, etc.). The general rule of thumb is that once a school/District reopens, the decision on returning to distance ...learning is guided by classroom, school, and district data rather than county data. Since TUSD elementary schools were approved for a waiver from the State, tier changes do not impact their reopening. On the flip side of this, if schools are unable to fully reopen while in the red tier, and their county returns to purple, then they must wait for a return to the red, with the exception of any small learning groups that have already been returned and established as per additional state guidelines. Prior to reopening for TK-K on October 26, TUSD had already returned several special education classrooms under the separate small learning group guidance. Beginning November 3 TUSD will be expanding this process to secondary and will be targeting students enrolled in special education along with those who have connectivity, attendance, and/or grade issues. It is important to understand that any confirmed case of COVID-19 in a classroom will trigger a return to distance learning for 14 days. If multiple classroom cohorts have a positive case then the entire school will follow a similar path. Finally, if multiple schools are quarantined, this could trigger the closure of the entire district. While we are not bound by tier changes once schools reopen, it is likely that if there is an increase in COVID-19 cases in the community this will also be manifested in our schools. It is why the actions of our Turlock community play such an important role in the ability of our schools to stay open; in other words, it takes a village! Next week we will focus on the communication plan for various COVID-19 case scenarios and, thereafter, the steps our health staff are taking at sites to help schools remain open by following a strict protocol for students displaying symptoms of illness. We hope these brief features will reinforce information shared in our COVID-19 staff training as well as frontload important information for those who have not yet attended. Stay safe and #MASKUP. https://conta.cc/2HS831w #TUSD
