****Medical Alert**** Numerous reports of viral Panleukopenia are being reported from the public and local veterinary hospitals. Tuolumne County Animal Control is also seeing an increase of very sick kittens coming into our shelter with the disease. Panleukopenia is a viral disease of cats often called feline distemper, however it is more closely related to parvovirus. It is highly contagious and can be fatal, especially in kittens. It is one of the diseases for which cats a...re routinely vaccinated (the "P" in combination FVRCP vaccines). Once a leading cause of death in kittens, panleukopenia has been mostly eradicated thanks to the vaccine, and it's not contagious to humans. But unvaccinated cats, such as stray or feral cats, are still at risk, especially kittens. Kittens under 5 months are usually the most severely affected, and even with intensive treatment, the outcome can be fatal. Vaccinations are highly effective, so it's vital that your beloved cats are up to date. Vaccinations provide good protection against panleukopenia and are part of the core vaccines routinely given to cats. Your vet will recommend a series of vaccines (usually starting at 6 to 8 weeks of age), and it is important to follow this schedule as the vaccinations are not totally protective until the full series is given. Different types of vaccines are available, and your vet can help you choose the one right for your cat. #vaccinessavelives #preventioniskey #panleukopenia

Our shelter is currently at capacity. Adopting dogs saves lives! Meet Sara. This sweet girl is currently around 2 years old, and is an absolute sweetheart! She would do well in any home, but we are unsure how she reacts to cats. Sara is not spayed yet, but will be soon pending an adoption hold. #adoptdontshop #adoption #adoptionsaveslives #rescue #rescuedog #shelterdog

It was a bittersweet day for Tuolumne County Animal Control yesterday, as we said goodbye to Officer Blackmore. . . She’ll still be saving animals, just for another county as she is moving. .... . Officer Blackmore is one heck of an ACO, and her compassion for animals is hard to find these days. We will miss her terribly! . . We wish her great success in this new journey she is taking. . . #aco #animalcontrolofficer #animalrescuer See more

It's going to be HOT, HOT, HOT this week!! As an owner of a pet, you're responsible for their well-being, and keeping them cool. Dogs are especially sensitive to high temperatures, and can get heat stroke very easily. Heat stoke in dogs has a high fatality rate. During excessive heat, we recommend keeping your pets inside (if possible). Set the thermostat to 78 or lower while gone. Allow fresh water access, and close curtains to keep your house cool. For outdoor pets, always ...provide shade, fresh water, and access to air flow. Misters and kiddie pools work great as a cooling source. Livestock should also have access to fresh water, shade, and exercise should be done before 7am. As always, NEVER LEAVE YOUR PET IN A VEHICLE. #heatwave #heatsroke #petsafety #californiaweather
