[ENG] Our Water Services Division is pleased to announce the completion of its first waterline replacement project of 2021 on Rogge Street. This project is part of our proactive replacement plan to improve the city’s aging water infrastructure before unexpected breaks or disruptions occur. Around 50% of the water lines in Watsonville are over 80 years old. Our water crew replaces older sections of the water pipeline each year with a new, zinc-coated, ductile iron pipe which i...s more resistant to the corrosion of our acidic Watsonville soils. It cost 1 million dollars to replace 1 mile of pipeline and our goal is to replace a total of 2 miles each year. The next pipeline replacement project is currently active on Carolyn Court. These new pipes are expected to last another 80 years! Great photo of our historical City Plaza, photo taken sometime in the 1920s. In 1877, Watsonville's local newspaper, the Pajaronian suggested a fountain be installed in the newly created Watsonville City Plaza. It took 2 years before a fountain was donated in 1879. The fountain was donated to the City of Watsonville by the Butterfly Social Club. The Butterfly Social Club was a club for young social ladies. The fountain is made of bronze and had a granite base. When purchas...ed, It cost $150 dollars ($2,551.76 in today's money) to get it delivered to San Francisco and another $5 ($127.59) to deliver it to Watsonville. In 1880 a contract for $108 ($2,755.91) was awarded to Dick Welch to install the fountain in the Plaza.
