On this day in 1884, the first roller coaster in America opened on Coney Island. Reaching breakneck speeds of up to 6 mph, the ancestor of today’s increasingly daring rides was known as a switchback railway. Will you be revisiting your favorite roller coasters this summer?

California’s reopening today feels like returning to a normalcy not seen since March of last year, but a few critical requirements remain in place to ensure public health. Please continue to wear masks on public transportation and in community shelters, correctional facilities, medical facilities, and in K-12 classrooms. The city of Tulare is well established as the heart of California agriculture, but the community did not have an easy time getting there. Named for Tulare Lake, which was once the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, Tulare’s foundations began as the headquarters for the Southern Pacific Railroad. Even after burning down and being rebuilt three times in its early years, the community suffered once more when the railroad moved its headquarters, and the primary impe...tus for the community’s growth, to Bakersfield. Ironically, the death of Tulare Lake provided the means of rejuvenation for the city after which it was named: while the redirection of the rivers that fed into the lake for agriculture ultimately caused the Tulare Lake to disappear, it was the subsequent new irrigation systems that allowed the city to bloom as an agricultural powerhouse. Being centrally located nearly equidistant to every major California port doesn’t hurt, either!

Did you know? Studies show that roundabouts like the one at the Farmersville interchange substantially reduce air pollution. Harmful emissions can increase when cars are left idling and made to suddenly accelerate, such as at stoplights and stop signs. Roundabouts keep traffic moving, which keeps pollutants - and frustrations! - low.
